86-0109 Saleen Mustang

This 1986 Ford Saleen Mustang reportedly remained with the original owner until 2016 and was acquired two years ago by the seller, who has since added approximately 500 of the 84k indicated miles. Finished in black over gray cloth, the car is one of 201 Saleen examples produced for the model year and is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 mated to a five-speed manual transmission. A repaint was performed in 2017, after which replacement Saleen lower body moldings and graphics were installed. This Fox-Body Mustang is now offered with its build sheet, factory literature, service records, photos of the repaint process, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Missouri title in the seller’s name.

The exterior was repainted in 2017 after the car was backed into on the second day of the seller’s ownership. A 1985-model hood was sourced and installed, and one headlight was replaced. Some hail damage on the roof was also repaired, and rust near the passenger-side quarter window was corrected. New weather stripping was installed after the paintwork along with new Saleen lower body cladding and graphics.

16” basketweave wheels feature Saleen center caps and wear 225/50 Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires. The Saleen package added an upgraded Racecraft suspension system with Koni shocks, and an aftermarket rear strut tower brace is noted. The front brakes are said to have been replaced by the seller.

The interior features two-tone gray cloth upholstery with red piping on the seat inserts. Factory equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, and power locks.

A three-spoke steering wheel fronts “Saleen Mustang”-branded primary instrumentation, including a 170-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer. This car is equipped with an optional Escort radar detector, which includes an overhead plug. The seller notes poor audio quality from the stock Kenwood stereo, as well as a crack in the dash top center speaker cover. The five-digit odometer shows just under 84k miles.

The 5.0-liter V8 sends power to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and was rated at 200 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque when new. Recent maintenance is said to have included an oil change and the installation of a replacement battery, and the seller notes a whining sound when the car is in reverse. An aftermarket cat-back exhaust system has been added.

Most folks in our hobby are aware of the exclusivity of Saleen production vehicles. Rare and uncommon sights throughout daily life. What some may not realize are how the vehicle assets and “extra” items are rarer than the physical automobile.

Case in point are the early Saleen Mustang Owners Jackets. These jackets were issued to new owners after they returned their survey card to Saleen Autosport regarding their new vehicle purchase.

Why are the jackets uncommon? Any number of reasons may apply. Maybe they were a high-wear item. Maybe the jacket was kept as a souvenir. Or maybe new owners simply did not fill out the customer survey.

In today’s world it makes finding an original jacket no easy task for the owner or enthusiast. -DB

– 1986 Mustang Saleen number 86-0046
– One of only 201 cars in 1986
– Bright red/gold graphics.
– Runs and drives as it should and as it did new
– Car has been about 90% restored

Selling my 1986 Mustang Saleen number 46. This car was originally sold in Massachusetts but spend most of it’s life in California. The car has absolutely zero rust. The body has a hundred and ten thousand miles on it, but the rebuild only has just over a thousand.

The car is one-of-one in two ways, it is the only ’86 Saleen that was red with gold wheels, gold stripes, tan interior and T-tops. It is the one and only one in ’85 or ’86 that was ever ordered with no center console. The car was ordered with no center console, but a center console was received with it when it was new. Which I have, it retains the Saleen plaque on the cigarette ashtray. The car was also ordered with no AC, and it was a no power option group, but it does have power windows.

86-0046 Saleen Mustang
86-0046 Saleen Mustang

The car retains everything that is factory to it. It has the Kenwood radio the Kenwood speaker covers the Momo steering wheel the original center caps and so on. The car has been about 90% restored. It has newer paint which is extremely nice, very nice interior with new seat covers and carpet period and a fresh motor would just over a thousand miles on it that was rebuilt to factory spec.

86-0046 Saleen Mustang
86-0046 Saleen Mustang

One of the only things that is not original are the shorty headers and exhaust. The car also has 3.73:1 gears instead of the original 2.73s. The car runs and drives as it should and as it did new. The car also has Eibach springs for a better ride, but I have the original Racecrafts in a box. In the Saleen book, it states that this car was one of the first three to receive the 1986 front and rear valance for 1986 model year Saleen Mustangs. This car is also one of three t-top Saleens that actually came from Ford as a T-top car and was not converted. Car has brand new tires as well, and the wheels were refinished. Basically all the running gear is new. It does need a speedometer cable.

I really don’t want to sell the car, but it just isn’t the right season for me to own something like this.

Details on this rare car, lots of original paperwork and build sheets, 100% authenticated

1 of 1 that is Red/Gold and Factory T-tops (In the Saleen book, it states that this car was one of the first three to receive the 86 front and rear Valance )
– One of three t-tops from Ford not an aftermarket conversion
– Rare A/C delete
– No power option group
– Power windows
– Gold Riken 16in wheels (new tires, refurb wheels ,correct center caps)
– The car was ordered with no center console, but a center console was received with it when it was new
– Saleen plaque on the cigarette ashtray
– Kenwood radio the Kenwood speaker covers
– Momo steering wheel the original center and horn button
– Needs a speedometer cable
– This car was originally sold in Massachusetts but spend most of it’s life in California. The car has absolutely zero rust
– The car has 110,00 miles but the motor is fresh with about 1,000 brake in miles (factory specs)
– New seat covers and carpet
– Fresh paint, new seat covers and carpet
– 3.73 gears instead of the original 2.73
– Stock springs to improve ride (Stock Saleen springs inc)

86-0018 Saleen Mustang
86-0018 Saleen Mustang

1986 Saleen #18. Very nice original, unmolested four-eyed Saleen mustang. This car has been in a climate controlled storage for the last 10 years. Southern car with no rust issues ever. I would drive this car cross country right now without hesitation. Very nice running, driving car with lots of get up and go!

86-0018 Saleen Mustang
86-0018 Saleen Mustang

It is not showroom perfect, but has won several trophies at local shows. There a couple of small scratches here and there as you expect from a 31 year old car, but nothing major (you would have to look really closely to see them!). The front air dam was repainted before I bought the car due to rock chips, but never re-striped. The color match is perfect.

86-0018 Saleen Mustang
86-0018 Saleen Mustang

There were only 201 of these made in 86. The value will only go up from here.

The only reason I am selling this car is to downsize my collection.

You are welcome to inspect the car or have someone check it out for you.

Thanks.

REAR VIEW: 86-0068 & GRASSROOTS RACING

PHOTOS & TEXT EXCERPTS: GEORGE CHABAL

“Original owner with 10,000 miles, original paint and interior. 86-0068 was special ordered as a stripped down Mustang from Ford and drop shipped to Saleen Autosport for the Saleen conversion. Car was purchased to compete in SCCA Solo II.”

86-0068 Saleen Mustang
86-0068 Saleen Mustang, competition debut

The ’80s were a relaunch of factory-backed racing efforts from Ford Motor Company. Earlier in the decade, with the birth of Special Vehicle Operations, FMC became a global juggernaut in all forms of vehicle racing through their Ford Motorsport program lead by Michael Kranefuss. While Detroit was busy forming Goliath; a little-known Californian upstart run by Steve Saleen approached the Motorsport operation with his plan to remanufacture 5-Liter Mustangs into an uncompromised, signature series, street-legal, niche performance vehicle. With SVOs blessing, the Saleen Mustang concept became a welcomed addition to FMCs Motorsport agenda and their “Racing into the Future” marketing vision.

“Saleen had said this car was what they would have done if they were to sell a R-version to the public. At the time they were out of the Hurst shifters for the street cars, but since they knew I would be racing this one; Saleen took a backup shifter from their race team to install into 86-0068.”

86-0068 Saleen Mustang
86-0068 Saleen Mustang

1986 was Saleen Autosport’s debut year into SCCA road racing. Their ’86 model year signature package was approved for SCCA Showroom Stock Endurance Series in class SS/GT. Saleen would compete with SCCA’s entire calendar of events; winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Mosport race late in the season. While the factory racing team was busy scraping paint with Porsche and Corvette on a national stage, effort was also made to endorse Saleen Mustang sales to regional racers seeking a value added, sanction approved performance package, for their dreams of clinching the checkered flag. Through Saleen Autosport’s grassroots support program; experienced racers could special order a new vehicle and qualify for competition incentives throughout their competition season.

“86-0068 was the first Saleen Mustang shipped to Pennsylvania. After I took delivery Steve Saleen called me and asked if I was willing to take my car to New York for a Koni advertising photo shoot. I mentioned to Steve I had to make sure could take time away from work. When I called back the following day Saleen had made other arrangements because of their short lead time.”

George Chabal, of western Pennsylvania, was one of Saleen Autosport’s earliest competition customers. With an eye on the SCCA Solo II Series, George contacted Steve Saleen on how best to order a new Mustang for club racing. With Steve’s assistance they ordered a Bright Red 5-Liter LX hatchback with tinted glass, light group, power lock group and Ford radio delete. Other equipment would include Saleen’s standard Kenwood sound system, Ford Mustang GT seating and Hurst short-throw shifter; George would arrive to PA SCCA events in style.

86-0068 Saleen Mustang
86-0068 Saleen Mustang

Produced by Saleen Autosport using their facility at Burch Ford in La Habra California and shipped to Bures Ford in early May; 86-0068 was an unusual Saleen Mustang conversion given the lack of air conditioning, power windows and featuring a light grey Momo steering wheel.

For the 1986 model year Saleen produced 201 serialized Mustangs, 198 were street models with three competition prepared vehicles. The body style breakdown of those street models are, 187 hatchbacks and 11 convertibles.

Of the 187 street prepared hatchbacks, it is known that 47 were painted Bright Red (paint code 2R). Of those, 44 featured Charcoal interiors. All 44 were equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions, while 43 were built from the LX 5-Liter platform.

Closer examination of these 44 Bright Red with Charcoal interior conversions reveal, 35 were equipped with Saleen’s Kenwood Stereo. Of the 187 street prepared hatchbacks 86-0068 is one of three with delete features and one of three known with a light grey Momo steering wheel.

THEN & NOW: 86-0083 – THOSE ELUSIVE CONVERTIBLES OF 1986

PHOTOS: CHRIS FLANDERS & MIKE CHARLES

Nineteen eighty-six, a model year of continuing formation and growth for a young Saleen Autosport. After their learning curve freshmen effort; Saleen Mustang production was standardized with both vehicle content and build location, a new Escort Endurance racing effort with lead sponsor General Tire was inked, while national Ford dealer awareness brought Saleen Mustangs into new mid-west and east coast markets. This was the year that set to establish Saleen as an image builder and halo performance brand.

85-0038 Saleen Mustang convertible - Hot Rod Magazine
The car that started the convertible craze? 85-0038

For 1986 the convertible body style was not an official offering from Saleen. No marketing materials exist, nor pricing and ordering details. The lone hint to a Saleen Mustang convertible came way of 85-0038 and a photograph in Hot Rod Magazine. A supplemental image included with a road test feature on the new 1985 Saleen Mustang hatchback. An article that published in April of 1986.

Regardless of hurdles and simple unawareness, eleven buyers ponied of nerve and dollars to request a special Saleen Mustang convertible during this sophomore production year. From what we have found, six were painted black, three were bright red and two were white. While six were built on the readily available Mustang GT chassis with the remaining five on the Mustang LX 5.0 chassis.

Currently living the easy life, our feature car 86-0083, is one of two 1986 Saleen convertibles ordered by Galpin Ford. Both vehicles were based on Mustang GT chassis’, painted bright red, equipped with charcoal leather interior, and required the steering wheel delete. 86-0083 was the second arrival and most notably featured in the 1986 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of this writing the older twin is also alive and well.

THE RESTORATION OF 86-0064

PHOTOS: RAY BARE

86-0064 Saleen Mustang
86-0064 Saleen Mustang

To veterans in the Saleen hobby, witnessing the restoration of early series vehicles are not a new phenomenon. The notion of “stay ahead of the curve” rang true when vehicles under the age of ten were rebuilt to better-than-new status during the 1990s.

86-0064 Saleen Mustang
86-0064 Saleen Mustang

As first generation Saleen Mustangs approach their thirtieth birthdays, we are poised to witness a renaissance in the repair, refresh and restoration of these ’80s and ’90s performance icons. This transition is apparent with Saleen enthusiast Ray Bare. Ray is part of a new generation breathing life into stationary relics in need of passionate caretakers.

Located by way of Craigslist during spring 2013, Ray spied 86-0064, a typical pre-owned 5-liter Mustang that survived 20-years of doing battle as a “hot car.” The fiberglass cowl hood, color change (tonality of hue), rebuilt stroker 302 and new roof skin were clear indications #64 lived with its needle pointed to the right side of the dial.

86-0064 Saleen Mustang
86-0064 Saleen Mustang

Built in late April/May of 1986 and delivered to Snipes Ford, #64 represents a near typical spec-model for Saleen Autosport. These build features include: a complete ’86 model year body kit, 16″x7″ Riken lace wheels, GT sport seating with GT dash trim and Kenwood sound system. Notable exceptions to equipment were: retention of the original equipment Ford shift assembly (in lue of Hurst unit) and an alternative Momo Master steering wheel (caused by availability issues with the Veloce).

1986 Saleen Mustang production would total 201 units for the model year with 190 completed in the hatchback body style. The more common LX trim represent 183 vehicles with 46 units ordered in Bright Red (2R) paint, of those 43 feature charcoal interior. Of the 43 LX hatchbacks in Bright Red with charcoal interior; it is estimated 31 were produced with correct model year body kit and 16” wheels.

THE RESTORATION OF 86-0025, AKA “SASSY”

PHOTOS & TEXT EXCERPTS: TOM KAMMAN

With 30-years’ worth of Saleen automobiles running streets and racetracks the world over, each vehicle has a story to tell. A history to explorer or a past that gains attention. Our feature model, 86-0025, is such a vehicle.

86-0025
“Sassy Green” – 86-0025

Ordered by Big Valley Ford in Stockton, California and delivered in mid-February, serial number 86-0025 is an early 1986 carryover model featuring both 15″x7″ HRE wheels and exterior body kit from 1985 series production stock. The interior is standard early ’86 Saleen, meaning GT sport seating, LX dash trim with an original equipment Ford manual shift assembly and knob rowing gear changes. While a standard Saleen supplied Kenwood stereo supplied hi-fi tunes to passengers.

86-0025 has a build cycle that places it within one of the first thirty Saleen Mustangs produced for the 1986 model year. It is one forty to feature a 1985 body kit, one of twelve with 15” wheels, and one of three painted 2R (Bright Red) with both of these carryover features.

86-0025
Green, green and more green.

Purchased for $3,800.00 in June 2011, 86-0025 was an honest two-owner, accident and rust free California car. This car spent 10-years with the original purchaser and changed hands in 1996. The infamous electric “Sassy Grass” green color was applied during the late ’90s under supervision of owner number two. This exterior refresh was only briefly enjoyed as Sassy was pulled from street duty and went into storage for twelve years.

Third owner Tom Kamman accepted the challenge to return Sassy to the once proud Bright Red Saleen ordered by Big Valley Ford. A lengthy two year project with an excellent end result.

Well, it took another two months for my slow-in-the-heat work pace to get her put back together but here she is, new base-clear Jalapeno Red, new stripes, every piece of weatherstrip new:

86-0025 aka Sassy

I tried to keep the interior as original as possible, I don’t like the reproduction seat covers, so took the best inserts of four seats to make two good ones, with new outer grey. Backseat is just cleaned up original, new carpet, NOS dashpad, new Momo w/red stitching:

Underhood was a big battle, it was all green, including the under side of the hood and the hinges, had to sand and repaint everything, sourced a junkyard set of red hinges and stock intake manifold. I have both the original super rare Hayashi Racing 15″ wheels with a set of original Gatorback tires, and I have these 16″ Australian mesh wheels with new Falkens:
