Saleen Mustang #DR1 –The Prototype, Only 4,500 Miles from New, Supercharged V-8 Engine with 650+ Horsepower, Charity Car with Proceeds Being Donated by Brenspeed to the Next Gen Education Program
The original Ford Mustang debuted on April 17, 1964. Ford originally expected 100,000 units a year to sell, as it was deemed a revolution in design and appearance. Ford was inundated with interest, as well as orders, for these benchmark cars, and by the end of first day they had already taken 22,000 orders! An astounding 417,000 units were produced in the first year alone, and exceeded one million units by the end of the second year.
Ford had created a modern day monster, and being offered in many guises from coupes to fastbacks and also convertibles. Ford’s stance on the Mustang was to also create a pedigree, something the spirited drivers amongst us would enjoy. So, to air their opinion, they campaigned the Mustang as the Official Pace Car at Indianapolis in 1964; the crowds loved it.
For some, though, the Factory Stock cars were still not special enough and a gap in the market led to specialized tuning companies plowing the way forward with special builds to give a “Track Experience” through a driving set up that could also haul the groceries home as well. Many bespoke tuning companies have been conceived over the years but one name stands out in these modern times – “Saleen”.
The car you see before you is very special indeed. The serialized 2011 Saleen Drag Racer #1 was built by Saleen & Brenspeed for marketing purposes. It was to show the capability of the Saleen Mustang with upgrade options much beyond the standard Saleen Mustang typically available, yet it carries a Saleen tagged serial number.
This car should be a Saleen collectors dream. If you want something rare, this is it. Brenspeed has been initiating Saleen’s mechanical upgrades for a number of years now and has made a name for themselves in the marketplace as one of the leading tuning companies. Many have tried to create fast and competitive Mustangs over the years but their attention to detail, research, and development, has led them to create some of the most well known and prolific Mustangs in the world today.
With a Forged Supercharged 302 TI-VCT with steel crank and upgraded rods and pistons, the motor got the best of everything. The car’s concept was to push the boundaries but yet maintain reliability, which was not always associated with higher horsepower cars. Brenspeed installed a 2.4 litre Twin-Screw supercharger to obtain the power required for the project, this Supercharger was only ever fitted to two Saleens and never went into production as its cost was deemed too expensive by its peers, thus creating a true “Prototype” Mustang. When Shelby was only using a 1.9 litre unit on their cars, you can understand how much more powerful #DR1 really is.
The brakes were upgraded as well as the exhaust system. Axles and gearing were also modified to take the extra power. In fact, no stone was left unturned with this very special car. As with most cars of this racing pedigree, the cabin area is not set for comfort, but this car received bespoke Carbon Fiber Buckets wrapped in leather and, with its exterior finished in Ingot Silver Metallic wearing its 20 Saleen Alloy wheels, we are sure you’ll agree this is one handsome vehicle.
This is a truly special car, a prototype, a Sunday car for cruising and an animal at the race track if the mood takes you. It has covered a mere 4,500 miles since its completion and has been housed in the main foyer of Brenspeed’s Indiana Headquarters. Offered without reserve, with Brenspeed donating the proceeds to the Next Gen Education Program, this car will undoubtedly be the charitable highlight of the evening.
Schenley Park is the scene of our nation’s largest vintage race event. 150 vintage racers gather here each July to test their skills and entertain the crowd. The PVGP races through Schenley Park are considered by many drivers to be the most challenging race course worldwide. The 2.33 mile circuit has 23 turns not to mention haybales, manhole covers, phone poles and stone walls. The Grand Prix in Schenley Park is the only vintage race event that is run on actual city streets – made possible by our Pit Crew of 1,000 volunteers.
The best place to watch the races is from the 456 acre Bob O’Connor Golf Course where the Grand Prix stages an International Car Show with over 2,000 vehicles on display. These car shows are mainly supported by local car clubs but are also open to the public for only $30 for the weekend. In addition to the car shows there are dozens of sponsor tents, a village full of vendors and plenty of food and refreshment vendors. 200,000 spectators are expected to come out and watch the races – there is no cost for spectators to enter, but we do encourage donations. Proceeds from the event benefit charity.
There is so much that happens on the Race Weekend in Schenley Park that we can’t fit it all on one page – so here are some quick links to individual events that occur over the weekend.
There are practice/warm-up sessions each morning. Qualifying races take place on Saturday with the Featured Races on Sunday. Both afternoons feature exciting racing as groups are separated by engine size and year of manufacture. There is little difference to spectators between Saturday’s and Sunday’s track action as over 175 cars will compete.

Whitefish, MT / July 7, 2014 / Saleen Automotive Inc. (OTC: SLNN), an American specialty manufacturer of high performance vehicles, technical performance parts, and lifestyle accessories, recently reported FY 2013 revenue that increased 96% to $5,279,887 and gross profit from vehicles and parts that increased 563% to $748,378, signaling an ongoing turnaround in its financial performance.
At the same time, the company announced the release of the Saleen Tesla S, began selling its performance vehicles in China, signed an agreement with BASF (OTC: BASFY) to utilize its state-of-the-art color technology, and appointed legendary Top Fuel driver Joe Amato to its Board of Directors. These efforts set the stage for significant growth over the coming year by increasing revenue opportunities.
Tesla’s Growth
The importance of these milestones is underscored by Tesla Motors Inc.’s (NASDAQ: TSLA) recent announcement that it expects to deliver about 7,500 Model S vehicles in Q2 as it moves towards its goal of more than 35,000 Model S deliveries in 2014. After beginning with just 53 deliveries to China in April, the company quickly ramped up to an estimated 1,200 deliveries during the second quarter.
The Saleen Tesla S could capture a portion of the growing market given its unique design and performance characteristics. Since many Tesla buyers are already high-end buyers, the Saleen version of the iconic electric vehicle could accelerate sales as the market takes notice. The impact of these sales could become increasingly apparent over the coming quarters as they are reflected in the financial statements.
China Exposure
China’s car-buying market has been on the rise over the past few years, as an increasing number of Chinese citizens join the middle class. According to McKinsey & Company, the country’s car market will grow ten-fold between 2005 and 2030, yielding the world’s largest car market by a wide margin, while the number of registered cars is expected to reach 200 million by 2020.

Saleen Automotive’s distribution agreement with GreenTech Automotive to distribute its full line-up of vehicles within China could prove to be an exceptional move by management. Beginning in Spring 2014, the company’s high-performance vehicles were put up for sale within the country, which means that shareholders could begin seeing the fruits of those labors in FY 2014 and beyond.
Upcoming Releases
Saleen Automotive plans to continue its aggressive release schedule with the introduction of the 2015 Saleen 302 Mustang. With this year being the 50th anniversary of the iconic Ford (NYSE: F) Mustang’s release, enthusiasts have been provided this week with a first look at the all-new Saleen Mustang model, which is the first major Mustang redesign since 2005. Management plans to unveil additional details and specifications as production draws closer.
“With this model being the first major Mustang redesign since 2005, we took this as an opportunity to push the limits in both design and performance,” said the company when releasing the photo. “We feel this latest Saleen Mustang model is perfectly positioned as the next American exotic, campaigning on the world stage.”
Recently, USA Today published a story covering the photo release calling Steve Saleen “one of the best in the business” and outlining some of the changes that could be expected in the new Mustang model.
