Description
Lot #645 – This is a fully documented 2005 Saleen Extreme S281 R&D Prototype finished in Speedlab Yellow over a Dark Charcoal leather interior with black graphics. It’s a true one-of-one car with 21,727 actual miles, most of which occurred during factory testing, and is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine backed by a 6-speed manual transmission.

Saleen did not release the Extreme model to the general public for purchase until 2006. This Saleen was used as the promotional Extreme model, which was unveiled at the Chicago and New York auto shows, generating pre-orders for 2006 production. This exact car can also be found within factory promotional literature. The 2005 Extreme Prototype story is very unique. In the Saleen production logs there were three prototypes set for production in 2005: #0001E, #0002E and #0003E. In reality, the #0003E car was never actually produced. The #0002E car, Sonic Blue in color, was purchased by an R&D employee and totaled while driving in the rain a short time after. This #0001E car is not only the first 2005 Extreme prototype but also the only remaining prototype in existence for the ’05-09 lineage. Many components on the car are hand-built and first of their kind, from the quarter-window deletes and carbon diffusers to a host of custom Saleen internal engine components.

In 2018 the 05-0001E was shipped to Corona, CA, not only for firsthand factory authentication, but to attend the Saleen World Car Show. For the show, the Saleen family selected one car from each production lineage to be parked in front of headquarters on display, and the 05-0001E was selected to represent the ’05-09 lineage. Ultimately, the one-of-a-kind 05-0001E was selected to receive The Best of Show award. While at Saleen Headquarters, Steve Saleen personally signed the dash with the #1 designation, and signed the engine compartment as well. Molly Saleen also signed her picture endorsing the 05-0001E at the show. All documented signatures, video of Steve Saleen signing 05-0001E, signed Factory Authentication Letter, processed Saleen Best of Show Award check, Saleen World Car Show numbered vehicle entry pass, and a factory brochure with 05-0001E featured will accompany the car. CARFAX shows Ford Motor Company manufacturer safety recall issued on 01/27/2019: Passenger airbag inflator replacement.

Saleen vehicles that were tagged for “corporate use” are an interesting sort. Executive demos, media loaners and development mules can all fall under this purpose. For the 2018 model year, Saleen serial 18-0001BL is believed to have been the first Saleen Mustang to debut the new mid-cycle refresh Black Label exterior styling kit. A necessity after Ford Motor Company did a minor exterior update to their S550 Mustang for 2018. This change prompted Saleen Automotive to retool their aerodynamic package.

After a successful assessment and implementation of exterior updates, 18-0001 would then develop and preview the 2019 SA35 “Anniversary Package.” Unveiling a new exterior and interior appearance during September 2018. Shortly thereafter this unique Mustang was pressed into show and exhibition duty across the country to help celebrate 35-years of the Saleen brand. -DB

FOUND: 93-0019 SUPERCHARGED

Model year 1993 marked the end of third-generation Ford Mustang production. An end to this familiar, boxy-shaped product with clear 1970s & 1980s design and engineering influences visible throughout. With a final year popularity surge, Ford Motor Company produced a total of 114,228 Mustang for 1993. Rough estimates claim that almost 50,000 of these swansong 1993 units were powered by the popular 5-Liter High-Output small block.

At Saleen Performance in Long Beach, California, their 1993 catalog of production models would see numerous updates and advancements continued from the previous year. 1993 is a best-of-the-best of ‘90s application and execution learned by Saleen for these final-run vehicles.

Produced after the New Year of ’93 and shipped to Danielson Ford in Connecticut on the 15th of January, 93-0019 is one of seven black exterior / black interior, 5-speed manual, supercharged hatchbacks produced for the year. One of four with optional 3.55:1 gearing and one of two with Saleen leather Recaro interior. These colors and options make 93-0019 the twin car to 93-0050 which was found hiding in Texas during 2015.

CARLISLE FORD NATIONALS 2019 COVERAGE

Video: SOEC Staff

Early June signals the start of car show season for Ford fans living within the Northeast and Great Lakes region of the United States. The Carlisle Ford Nationals, presented annually at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in central Pennsylvania, had a record-setting 3,196 show vehicles in attendance for this east coast FoMoCo celebration.

An unofficial estimate of 54 Saleen-manufactured vehicles were proudly on display to exhibit Power In The Hands of a Few to all participants and admirers. Our collection of Saleen vehicles for Saturdays Fun Field Car Show ranged from those increasingly popular “four-eyed” 1985-86 editions to the latest 2019 SA-35 as well as rare XP Explorers and a S121 Focus.

With such a fruitful bounty of show cars, here were a few Saleen vehicles of note that we spied over the weekend:

  • The rarely seen California GT. These dealer “zone specials,” without Saleen serialization, are mythical and historical creatures.

  • Two Saleen SC editions, one from 1991 and the other from 1993; both vehicles respectfully represent a high-water mark for Fox generation Saleen Mustangs.

  • A lone SN95 Saleen S351. If the early ‘90s SC were a high-water mark, then the S351 was a multidimensional rocketship towards an innovative new era.

  • New S550 Saleen Mustangs, as the current generation S302 continues to roll through assembly for nationwide distribution, we see abundant opportunities for growth.

Gratitude and appreciation to all participants, enthusiasts and owners that makes this event so exceptional. Until next year!

LAUNCH OF SALEEN CUP SERIES DELAYED

Single-make Saleen series delayed due to production holdups in S1 Cup cars…

The launch of the Saleen Cup has been delayed, with the single-make series, scheduled to debut this weekend at Sonoma Raceway, having been pushed back to next month.

Delays in the production of the Saleen S1 Cup cars, due to “unanticipated delays” of the import of parts, has been cited by the American automaker, which has a manufacturing plant in China and joint venture with Jiangsu Secco Automobile Technology Corporation.

The arrive-and-drive series was due to feature a grid of 20 Saleen S1s this weekend, in support of the SRO Motorsports America event at the Californian circuit.

“The Saleen Cup cars require specialty components that are sourced globally, and unanticipated delays importing and clearing these parts through customs have significantly delayed production,” a statement from the manufacturer read.

The series’ launch has now been slated for the next SRO America weekend at Portland International Raceway on July 13-14, with additional events at Watkins Glen International, Road America and Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

It is due to feature two 50-minute races on each weekend, with single or two-driver lineups and a mandatory pit stop.

Saleen will still have a presence at Sonoma, with a “race ready” version of the Saleen S1 set to complete hot laps, with the manufacturer hosting a hospitality area.

No word has been given if the delays could impact Saleen’s planned GT4 car for 2020.
