THEN & NOW: 86-0083 – THOSE ELUSIVE CONVERTIBLES OF 1986

PHOTOS: CHRIS FLANDERS & MIKE CHARLES

Nineteen eighty-six, a model year of continuing formation and growth for a young Saleen Autosport. After their learning curve freshmen effort; Saleen Mustang production was standardized with both vehicle content and build location, a new Escort Endurance racing effort with lead sponsor General Tire was inked, while national Ford dealer awareness brought Saleen Mustangs into new mid-west and east coast markets. This was the year that set to establish Saleen as an image builder and halo performance brand.

85-0038 Saleen Mustang convertible - Hot Rod Magazine
The car that started the convertible craze? 85-0038

For 1986 the convertible body style was not an official offering from Saleen. No marketing materials exist, nor pricing and ordering details. The lone hint to a Saleen Mustang convertible came way of 85-0038 and a photograph in Hot Rod Magazine. A supplemental image included with a road test feature on the new 1985 Saleen Mustang hatchback. An article that published in April of 1986.

Regardless of hurdles and simple unawareness, eleven buyers ponied of nerve and dollars to request a special Saleen Mustang convertible during this sophomore production year. From what we have found, six were painted black, three were bright red and two were white. While six were built on the readily available Mustang GT chassis with the remaining five on the Mustang LX 5.0 chassis.

Currently living the easy life, our feature car 86-0083, is one of two 1986 Saleen convertibles ordered by Galpin Ford. Both vehicles were based on Mustang GT chassis’, painted bright red, equipped with charcoal leather interior, and required the steering wheel delete. 86-0083 was the second arrival and most notably featured in the 1986 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of this writing the older twin is also alive and well.

Up for auction is a 1988 Ford Saleen Ranger This is 1 of 24 built.

This Saleen Ranger was a give away grand prize for the grand opening of Lechmere Department Store in the Metro Boston area. making it 1 of 1 This makes it a little more rare as it had an all out Pioneer stereo installed and a Pioneer sticker was and still is installed on the tailgate (see pictures).

The truck is in very good driving condition, I have had the following either repaired or replaced .. Tune up, brakes, all clutch components, and a new gas tank.

The truck is still in need of some minor repairs such as a heater core and some body work.

I am the second owner of the truck. The truck has all the same items a Saleen Mustang would have including seats, gauges, wheels, race craft suspension, 15 piece body kit, steering wheel, radio antenna, and so on.

This truck is a driver quality and should be restored to show quality due to the low production.

There is no rust in the bed of the truck, The undercarriage is very nice shape. I welcome inspections prior to bidding.

CARLISLE FORD NATIONALS 2015 IS A WRAP

The fastest weekend in June. This is but one description for the Ford Nationals by Carlisle Events. For an unprecedented third year, SOEC again hosted Steve Saleen and company for a weekend of Power In The Hands of a Few. A weekend filled with first introductions, information sharing, bench racing and countless autographs.

Many thanks goes to Jim Dvorak and Mothers Polish for supplying goody bags, a sample of their California Gold car wash and microfiber towel to our first 48 show registrants. This event relationship dates back to 2009. Show planning and support is the backbone of these gatherings and we must recognize the efforts of Rudy & Betsy Beyer, Mertz family, Boring family, and Greg Wackett for their tireless effort. Lastly, gratitude to all participants, enthusiasts and owners that make these events so special.

MOTORSPORT MAGAZINE: MY FIRST LE MANS

My first Le Mans

By: OLIVER GAVIN on June 01, 2015
Original Article: MOTORSPORTMAGAZINE.COM

It was a dark and stormy race… The 2001 24 Hours of Le Mans was certainly a baptism of fire. In fact, the extended periods of torrential rain that lashed the Loire Valley made that year’s edition of the twice-around-the-clock enduro one of the most brutal of all time.

Drivers: Konrad, Gavin, Borcheller
Drivers: Konrad, Gavin, Borcheller

My first experience of the French classic definitely stands out as one of the hardest of my career, but I look back at the race with pride, because I was involved in a great David and Goliath-style tale, driving alongside Franz Konrad and Terry Borcheller for the relatively small Saleen-Allen Speedlab squad, against the might of the factory Corvette Racing team.

Saleen Team at Le Mans 2001
Saleen Team at Le Mans 2001

We arrived at Circuit de la Sarthe off the back of a surprising victory on the Saleen S7R’s debut in the 12 Hours of Sebring. The car had never run for more than three hours in pre-season testing so nobody expected it to last, but we ended up taking pole position and translating that into a race win, beating the Velocity Yellow Corvettes.

All of a sudden, our GTS rivals stood up and paid attention and we headed to central France confident that the #60 car would be fast, but unsure how the story would unfold.

As at Sebring, pole position was ours. Franz elected to start the race and, using his many years of experience, instilled a sense of confidence within the Speedlab garages, a strong belief that we could survive and overcome the treacherous conditions.

However, we would be punished for our complacency when a freak shower between Arnage and the Porsche Curves caused a series of crashes involving as many as 15 cars, including ours.

A spin sent Franz into the Armco, necessitating extra pitstops to repair a damaged rear wing and rear deck, and I suppose this is where the larger and experienced teams come to the fore, as Corvette Racing wisely split its tyre strategies and simply drove around the carnage to establish a healthy and ultimately indomitable lead.

2001 Saleen S7R
2001 Saleen S7R

There were many times when I asked myself how the organisers could allow the race to continue as conditions worsened. It’s quite something when you’re aquaplaning on the Mulsanne Straight with zero visibility through a fogged up windscreen, trying to spot your braking point by gazing through the side windows for road markings and other landmarks, while listening intently to the engine notes of the cars ahead of you.

A stick with a sponge taped to the end accompanied Terry, Franz and I in the cockpit; the Saleen’s gullwing doors would send rainwater into your lap and the car’s electronics during the stops, only for the moisture to then accumulate on the inside of the windscreen.

As a result, misfires and other strange problems developed, but we kept plugging away and the #60 S7R was in an ideal position to grab a runner-up spot in the latter stages of the event but lost an engine cylinder with little more than three hours remaining.

The Speedlab crew repaired the ailing V8 engine for one last tour of the French countryside, having already completed the necessary laps to earn an official finishing position.

As I’ve always said, finishing is a victory in itself and that was never truer than in 2001. Proudly carrying battle scars and limping home on seven of its eight cylinders, Terry took the #60 machine over the line, third in the super-competitive GTS class, etching the Saleen name into the Le Mans record books.

2001 Saleen S7R
2001 Saleen S7R

My maiden Le Mans was an extreme experience and coming through such an ordeal taught me a huge amount, standing me in good stead and setting me up nicely for everything the French endurance classic has thrown at me since first entering the Corvette Racing fold in 2002.

I have taken the start of the 24 Hours on all but one occasion since. I have a good feeling for how to drive the opening stint of the race, but I also know that once you get past those first few laps, it’s pretty much all out of your control.

Of course, the story of the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans is yet to be written; I’ll probably draft the first chapter and then the plot will thicken with unexpected twists in the tale, inevitable moments of doubt and dramatic swings in fortune, building towards a tense and emotional climax.

You throw in other variables like changes in climactic conditions and driver error, as well as the challenges associated with racing during sunset, the hours of darkness and sunrise and you have a masterpiece on your hands. These are all parts of the narrative and Le Mans is one of those books you just can’t put down.

To be continued…

ULTRARARE SALEEN SA-30 2014 FORD MUSTANG!

Dirty Thirty: When Ed Hinker and Steve Saleen began talks to build Ed a custom Mustang, Ed never imagined that the project would evolve into the ultrarare Saleen SA-30 Mustang

Ed and Lisa Hinker of Sturgis, South Dakota, are Mustang enthusiasts—and that’s putting it lightly. They’ve owned countless Mustangs (many of them of the Saleen variety) and number Steve Saleen among their personal friends. That said, the 2014 Saleen SA-30 Mustang seen here wasn’t even a blip on Ed’s radar when he began talking to Steve about building him a unique Mustang.

“He doesn’t build one-off cars very often,” Ed says. “At SEMA we talked about building me a car.”

It wasn’t just any car that he had his heart set on. Ed wanted his car to feature throwback cues like the rear seat delete with exposed spare tire. They also discussed painting the finished product gray.

After the ideas were set in motion, Ed tells us that they ran into more than one hiccup. A full glass roof was planned with “frost touch”, but the glass kept wrinkling in production. The final product took about a year to build and was planned to debut at the Mustang’s 50th Anniversary celebration in Charlotte, North Carolina, in April 2014. Not long before then, Ed got a call from Steve Saleen.

“He told me he had good news and bad news. The good news was that the glass roof was finally working, but the bad (maybe not so bad) news was that the car was white.”

Ed was surprised but not at all put off by the news. It came to be that Steve had rolled Ed’s ideas into the production of his Saleen SA-30 vehicles, which celebrated 30 years of Saleen and its racing heritage.

You see, only 30 Saleen SA-30 vehicles were produced: 10 each of the Saleen 620 Camaro, the 570 Challenger, and of course the 302 Mustang. According to Ed, this particular SA-30 is unique in that it was the first one produced and the only one equipped with a rear seat delete and frost touch glass roof.

When Ed saw the car for the first time, he loved it, but he thought something was missing. “He took it back with him from Charlotte to add yellow piping on the seats to bring the exterior styling inside,” says Ed.

Each SA-30 Mustang is equipped with a stock 302 with forged internals and a compression ratio of 10:1. A Saleen intake sits atop the 302 with a 88mm throttle-body. Saleen high-performance headers with 3-inch pipes carry exhaust away from the engine.

Of course, a Saleen wouldn’t be complete without a supercharger. A Saleen Twin-Screw liquid-cooled supercharger producing 15 maximum pounds of boost powers the SA-30 to a cool 675 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. Ed told us his Mustang has run a best quarter-mile time of 11.2 seconds at 121 mph.

A TR3650 six-speed transmission allows Ed to slam gears whenever the craving arises. A full Saleen S4 suspension keeps the Cooper tires glued to the ground in the corners.

The striking Tire Smoke Pearl White paint offset by yellow and gray accents sets the SA-30 apart. The Saleen five-spoke forged wheels are color-matched to the body—a stunning detail. Body modifications include Saleen aerodynamic body parts: a downforce wing, a butterfly induction hood, and ground effects.

Going back to the interior that Steve had rebooted for Ed, leather and alcantara two-tone performance seating with yellow piping really pops with the aforementioned rear seat delete (with exposed forged color-matched spare), Saleen billet aluminum brace, and frost touch glass roof.

The SA-30 joins Ed and Lisa’s collection, which includes a variety of super-unique and rare cars and numerous other Saleens and Fords. Ed says, “I just like unique cars. I don’t drive them very often . . . mostly to shows and things like that. We’ll take them for a drive once in a while. I’d be surprised if any of them had more than a thousand miles on them.”

Ed does venture out to the Sturgis Mustang Rally each year with a specimen from his collection—a show he convinced Steve to experience as well. Ed is one of the organizers of the huge show, which drew around 1,000 Mustangs last year and takes place during Labor Day weekend each year. And you just never know what incredible vehicle Ed will show up with next!
