CLOSER LOOK: TRANSITION S302 BLACK LABEL SC (12-015)

Shipped to Riverside Ford on July 16th of 2012, S302 Black Label SC serial 12-015 had a number of identification variances not seen on other production Black Label Mustangs. A vehicle that was (and is) an emblem/identity transition car that shows both “SMS” and “Saleen” features.

Unique Features:
* Previous generation grill emblem used as fender emblems
* 2008-12 ASC/Saleen, MJA/Revstone era 14″ StopTech brake kit with silver “SALEEN” text
* No trunk panel mounted model identification emblem
* 2010-12 MJA/Revstone S-series gauge cluster
* 2010-12 MJA/Revstone S-series sill plates
* Saleen logo’ed Ford Racing supercharger
* Front bumper serial decal with SMS font
* SMS logo seating with SALEEN logo trunk mat
* SMS dash serial plate

Comparatively, 12-016 S302 Black Label SC shipped to Rich Ford on October 27th of 2012 featured a “SALEEN” logo’ed interior kit, S-logo wheel center caps, Saleen font serial bumper decal and 2005-10 era fender emblems, but used the SMS gauge cluster and sill plates.

From that data we have collected, it appears SMS Limited/Saleen Automotive produced 10 Mustangs* with Kona Blue exterior paint. Kona Blue was offered from model year 2010 and canceled during the 2012 production year.

The 14th annual Corona Police Department “Kids & Cops Holiday Magic” toy drive took place November 26th during the weekly Cars & Coffee Corona event at Saleen Automotive headquarters. This yearly event provides crafts and game activities for underprivileged children from the Corona community. Over 1000 underprivileged children are presented with gifts made possible through generous donations.

CLOSER LOOK: WHITE AND BEIGE HATCHBACK (88-0421)

For the 1988 model year Saleen Autosport kicked Mustang production into high gear. Coming off of the championship 1987 Escort Endurance season and moving vehicle production to an expanded facility in Anaheim California, Saleen was on top of the world for 1988.

Saleen Autosport advertised seven standard exterior color combinations and two interior colors for 1988, they were:

* Black / Silver Exterior Graphics
* Black / Gold Exterior Graphics
* Oxford White / Blue Exterior Graphics
* Oxford White / Silver Exterior Graphics
* Scarlet Red / Silver Exterior Graphics
* Scarlet Red / Gold Exterior Graphics
* Medium Charcoal Grey / Silver Exterior Graphics

* Charcoal Grey Interior
* Sand Beige Interior

Though, by request unlisted color combinations and non-standard exterior colors could be ordered with an optional fee.

88-0421 Saleen Mustang

Produced in Saleen Autosport’s new Anaheim facility during April 1988 and shipped to Bleakley Ford in May; 88-0421 was a standard Saleen Mustang conversion and contained the expected Ford and Saleen features.

For the 1988 model year Saleen produced 709 serialized Mustangs, 705 were street models with four competition prepared vehicles. The body style breakdown of those street models is, 543 hatchbacks, 137 convertibles and 25 coupes.

Of the 543 street prepared hatchbacks, it is known that 147 were painted Oxford White (paint code 9L). Of those, 18 featured Sand Beige interiors. Fourteen models were equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions, while 4 had the optional automatic.

For the model year 1988 it is known that Saleen Autosport produced a complete total of 106 Mustangs with Sand Beige interior.

From model year 1987 through 1989, Saleen Autosport produced a total of 209 Mustangs with Sand Beige interior. Of those, it is known that 36 were painted Oxford White (paint code 9L).

Offered here is a 2002 Saleen Speedster S281-Extreme showing only 791 one owner miles on the odometer. As any Saleen aficionado well knows, very few Extreme Speedsters were produced. This one of only 20 fitted with a 425 horsepower Saleen built S281E Engine. Unlike the stock Ford motor featured in the S281-SC, the S281E engine was machined and up-fitted for severe race duty by Saleen.

The MSRP tipped the scales at $70,637.00 in 2002, or 30% more than the Corvette Z06 offered the same year. The dollars went to racecar engineering and fine tuning prep for a car that was more than track capable, the Extreme was track ready right off the showroom floor. This particular example is signed by Steve Saleen himself, on the glove box. The overall condition is a near to new a 15 year old car can be. The most notable blem can be found on the passenger side fender call out (see photo). The owner has a pair of NOS fender callouts that you can keep or install as you see fit. The SMS (Steve Mark Saleen) 570 Challenger (“570” refers to the car’s 5.7-liter Hemi V-8) begins life as a stock R/T. The car is then dismantled and rebuilt with SMS components at the company’s 150,000 sq.-ft. complex in Corona, California. The most important of these is the SMS 296 Supercharger system, which uses a Lysholm twin-screw compressor along with SMS’s Six-Pack Intercooler System. The last features six finned tubes that Saleen says make the system about 60 percent more efficient than traditional intercoolers. Combined with a cold-air intake and a free-flowing SMS exhaust, the result is 500 bhp at 5700 RPM and 500 lb-ft. of torque at 3800 from 4.5 psi of boost!

Handling is addressed via new shocks, springs, anti-roll bars and SMS 20-in. wheels wearing 275-width Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires. The stock R/T’s brakes are tossed in favor of an SMS package with 14.0-in. rotors at all four corners clamped by 6-piston calipers up front and a 4-piston setup at the rear. A short-throw linkage for the 6-speed manual rounds out the mechanical upgrades.

A unique feature of the SMS 570 are the red butterflies on the power dome of the car’s hood, which open each time you press the throttle. Not only do they look cool, but Saleen says they give the car “direct air injection.” Other styling bits include new front and rear fascias, side skirts, a diffuser and rear wing. Also included on the SMS 570 Challenger (sold through select dealers) are SMS seats, gauges and door panels with hand-painted pinstriping.
