Description
Lot #438.1 – This 1989 Saleen Mustang time capsule is #178 with only 661 actual miles (mileage not indicated on the title). It’s offered by Gas Monkey Garage. Ford didn’t do a 25th Anniversary Mustang, but Steve Saleen did, introducing his SSC on April 17, 1989. Based in California, Saleen was a veteran SCCA Trans-Am and Formula Atlantic racer. Saleen owned several Shelby Mustangs and decided to follow in Shelby’s footsteps and make stock Mustangs into personal high-performance cars. The result was a limited-edition run of specially modified 5.0-liter V8 Mustangs that are instantly recognizable by special paint, graphics and interior combinations that any high-performance automotive enthusiast will appreciate. Engine, suspension, exhaust and brake upgrades are enjoyed by only a handful of lucky owners that get to experience these cars first-hand. This particular example, serial #00178, has been meticulously cared for in a private collection and is only now offered for sale, having been stored in a climate-controlled environment for the past 27 years. 5-speed manual transmission.

Chances are if you are looking at this add then you know what this car is but for the benefit of those that do not this car is one of 160 built. The first model Saleen modified the engine performance on. it is a two seater with a factory roll bar and Pioneer sound system. This car is a great unmolested original. it does have an offroad H-pipe because the original cats went bad. It is a true 29K mile car. The original cockpit adjustable suspension is still in place. un-cracked DP5 wheels. The car has spent sometime outside as the original owner’s wife drove the car to work daily. the side stripes are discolored from the sun, the rear carpet is faded, and the rear quarter window moldings need to be refurbished. It needs a battery, rear shock bushingsOverall the car is in good shape just needs some TLC
This Saleen Mustang SSC(the 25th Anniversary Mustang that Ford never made) is number 44 of 161 produced in 1989. It carried a $36,500 sticker price which was rather significant, considering the 5.0L LX sold for $15,000. The Saleen SSC had a top speed in the neighborhood of 156 MPH and were fitted with a 4-point roll bar with rear seat delete. They had electronic cockpit ajustible struts and shocks, 200 watt Pioneer sound system, leather interior and special DP5 wheels.
The car does need a few things power door lock actuator on the drivers side, fuel sending unit, rear shock bushings. The original cockpit adjustable suspension is still in the car. I am the third owner of the car and have owned it since 1997, the majority of that time it has spent sitting in the garage, it has not been registered in probably the last 12 years. This car is in original condition needs a little tlc but is a great low mileage all original car.

As a guy who drives all the latest sportscars as his job, you might think I don’t care about the older cars in the carpark. But nothing could be further from the truth.
But when I saw this perfectly-preserved Time Machine in the carpark at the recent GranTurismo Events trackday, I just had to share it…
Because in a car park full of amazing machines, this old ’80s Ford really stood out. It’s unconventional, it’s old and at only one known example in Europe, it’s also pretty damn rare!
It’s a Saleen SSC, a track-ready, Fox-body Mustang with a 330hp V8. At first glance, you might be forgiven for thinking there’s nothing simpler than this American iron. But there’s some cool stuff here… check out the ‘high-tech’ suspension:
Built by Monroe, the damping rates can be controlled from inside the button. Three settings, Firm, Normal and Soft. It might not be much compared to todays active dampers, but I found it interesting!
Fitted as standard with a basic rear rollcage, and trimmed in matching white/black/yellow leather, it’s like sitting in time machine. Albeit one powered by a Ford V8.
“The original leather seats are no good on track though,” admits owner and professional Mustang fan Goran. “That’s why I’ve fitted the period Recaros for this event.”
I also suspect that rubber isn’t period either, but let’s not get pedantic over such a curious and interesting car! From the snake’s head key-ring, to the graphic equaliser, this is a car with history.
As Goran went out for another lap, I have to admit I was a little jealous. This is a Time Machine I’d love to take a lap in.

1989 Ford Mustang Saleen SSC
This 1989 Saleen SSC Mustang is chassis #031 of the 161 SSCs built and has just under 1,100 original miles with comprehensive paperwork from new. Sold with a large binder full of documentation including original sales order, correspondence between buyer, dealer and Saleen, photos of the build process and much more, it’s essentially a brand-new car and remains in excellent, untouched condition throughout. Still registered on its original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin or MSO certificate, the car is one of our favorites of any Saleen ever built.
Many professionally taken photos show the car in great detail throughout. Built as an unofficial tribute car for the Mustang’s 25th anniversary, SSC stood for Saleen Super Car and modifications were more than skin deep, though a good-looking, Saleen-designed bodykit and Dynamic Performance wheels were standard fit. The seller has verified that all paint is all original using a paint gauge.
Inside, FloFit leather seats and matching door panels wear yellow and light gray trim that complements the exterior stripe scheme. A Momo Montecarlo replaces the bulky Ford OEM airbag steering wheel but retains its cruise control switches, a three-way, center console-installed switch operates electronically adjustable Monroe Formula GA shocks, and Steve Saleen’s signature is scrawled in Sharpie right above the glove box. Also notable is the rear-seat delete option and roll bar. Gauges were specific to the Saleen as well, and somehow were offered with a 200MPH speedo instead of the goofy DOT mandated 85 mph unit in the standard Mustangs that year. The Pioneer stereo and equalizer were fitted by Saleen to all SSCs.
Underhood, Saleen mods include a larger throttle body and revised intake plenum feeding large port Saleen heads. Other changes included an uprated cooling system, roller rockers, and stainless steel tubular headers, the result of which was 292, 50 state smog legal HP—an increase of 67 over stock. Torque was also increased from by 25 lb. ft. to 325.
An Auburn limited slip differential with 3.55 gears was also added, and the above-mentioned Monroe shocks are joined by Racecraft coil springs. Note that the stock exhaust system is retained and complete including the cats, something very rare on even survivor mustangs these days. Four wheel grooved discs are clamped by SVO calipers, which was a big upgrade over the rear drums on the standard Mustangs, and additional chassis stiffening comes via a four-point brace visible above in the engine bay shot. Note the multiple factory-applied panel VIN stickers shown in the gallery, as well as several more lift shots.
Documentation is extensive and neatly organized, this photo showing only two of dozens of pages of work orders, sales receipts, factory brochures, build process photos and more. The car runs and drives nicely despite minimal use over the years. Oil changes have been performed throughout the years and the car has had one oil filter change – the original oil filter is included. Rear hatch struts have been replaced (originals included), and everything else on the car is original including the tires.
