Nov. 23–Southern Nevada automobile dealers could use a push. Maybe they’ll get it from the Motor Trend International Auto Show that runs Friday through Sunday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
It gives consumers the opportunity to compare hundreds of new models from 30 manufacturers at one location without feeling the pressure to buy, show spokeswoman Lauren Holzman said.
Sales of new cars, trucks and vans depend on changing consumer tastes, popularity of the manufacturer’s vehicle models and the intensity of competition with other dealers.
At the auto show, prospective buyers can feel the performance and handling of new Ford models, such as the Ford Edge and Expedition EL, at the Ride and Drive sponsored by Southern Nevada Ford dealers. Ford is also bringing two concept vehicles — the F-250 Super Chief and Ford Mustang GT-R.
“This show is for people who are either in the market for a new car or they want to see the concepts and exotics. They’re really the crowd-pleasers,” Holzman said.
The exotic car collection, displayed by Lamborghini Las Vegas and valued at more than $1 million, features the $600,000 Saleen S-7, Lamborghini and Spyker.
Another popular component of Motor Trend International Auto Show is Aftermarket Alley, a mix of power, performance, parts and accessories vendors. On Saturday, a team of automotive specialists will spend six hours tricking out a 2007 Mustang GT convertible, transforming it from “stock to ‘Stang,” Holzman said.
“It’s cool because nobody is driving stock any more. There’s such a trend for cars really to say who you are,” she said.
Sales of new vehicles declined 2.4 percent in the 12-month period through June, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. Automobile manufacturing product shipment fell from $93.2 billion in 1997 to $85.8 billion in 2002, according to the latest bureau statistics.
Automobile sales are certainly affected by economic cycles, increasing when consumers feel financially secure and decreasing when the economy softens and buyers postpone purchases, said Keith Schwer, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research. Still, automobile production accounts for less than 4 percent of gross domestic product, he said.
Consumers are highly sensitive to prices, Schwer said. Automotive dealers are more likely to offer generous incentives, rebates and financing deals during slow periods to maintain high sales volumes and to reduce inventories.
“I heard a guy in Michigan talk about price concessions and excess capacity in the industry. You’ve got a problem between domestic and foreign (imports). And the labor market challenge … what percentage of that is to pick up health care costs? That’s part of the bigger issue,” Schwer said.
According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, new vehicle sales account for more than half of total sales revenue at franchised new vehicle dealers. These sales generate additional revenue in other departments of new car dealers. By putting new vehicles on the road, dealers can count on aftermarket additions, repair and service customers and future trade-ins of used vehicles.
Justin Findlay, general manager of Findlay Volkswagen, said he usually goes to the Motor Trend International Auto Show to check out the competition.
“We don’t see a ton of immediate sales from it, but we do see some,” Findlay said. “A lot of times, it gives people a chance to look at all of our models.”
Findlay will be moving to general manager of Findlay Automotive Group’s new Chevrolet dealership opening in December at Las Vegas Beltway and South Rainbow Boulevard, one of several new dealerships in Las Vegas. He said Las Vegas has always had fewer dealerships per capita than other major cities around the nation.
Automobile dealers provided about 1.3 million wage and salary jobs in 2004, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Sales, installation, maintenance and repair workers accounted for 63 percent of wage and salary employment. Management, office and administrative support and transportation and material moving occupations made up another 35 percent.
Average weekly earnings of nonsupervisory workers in automobile dealers were $634 in 2004, substantially higher than the average for retail trade ($371), as well as that for all private industry ($529).
Earnings vary depending on occupation, experience and the dealer’s geographic location and size. Average wages range from $9 an hour for a cleaner of vehicles and equipment to $31 an hour for first-line supervisors and managers, according to the BLS.
Wage and salary jobs in automobile dealers are projected to increase 12 percent from 2004 to 2014, compared with projected growth of 14 percent for all industries combined.
Motor Trend International Auto Show hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, $4 for active and retired military and children ages 7-12.

High performance Mustangs take over Orange County
Ford tuner/supercar builder Saleen shut down a few Orange County streets and opened the doors to its headquarters for its 10th annual open house/car show.
Saleen (the company) let the Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club (SOEC) take over its manufacturing headquarters so that everyone could celebrate all things Saleen (the car). Though this car show was technically open to any and all cars, this event was pretty much dominated by all things Ford-powered and Saleen-tuned.
Though a few S7s and Saleen-tuned F150s were on hand, the car of the day was the Saleen Mustang. All generations of Saleen-tuned ‘Stangs were on hand, which is great for the Saleen Mustang fan, not-so-great for those looking for a bit of variety. Don’t get us wrong, we love Saleen Mustangs as much as the next certified gear-head. It just seems as if most of these cars are picked up by the type of guy that spends one too many hours watching the Barrett-Jackson auctions on TV and not-so-secretly hopes that his Saleen Mustang will be the next million-dollar car. Most of these Saleen Mustangs look as if they rarely come out of the garage, let alone see any sort of track time. Whatever happened to buying a race-ready car and taking it racing?
Of course, we have to admit that it was a treat to see some very clean mid-80’s Saleen Mustangs. We loved these cars ever since we were kids, and finally seeing one in real-life was almost as cool as seeing an actual DeLorean. Yes, we are using this paragraph to admit that we seriously loved tuned American muscle back in the day, so perhaps you guys will give the “import bias”-thing a bit of a rest…
As we mentioned in the opening sentence, Saleen also opened the doors to its factory. It wasn’t “operating” at this time, but show-goers could still see how Saleen is able to turn ordinary factory Fords into high-performance Saleens.
In fact, Saleen even had a separate section showing the frames and naked carbon fiber bodies of its S7 supercar. It’s amazing to think that this little cage is the basis for the S7…
Did you know that Saleen tunes more than just the Ford Mustang? Check out this Saleen-tuned Focus. This was the only one at the show… We sure would have liked to see more of ’em, though.
While we had a great time at Saleen’s open house, we left wishing for more. Saleen’s Mustangs were well represented, but we only saw the one Saleen Focus and zero Saleen Contours. We know that Saleen has them – we saw them at the Los Angeles car show a few years back. Here’s hoping that Saleen will dig those cars out for next year’s show…
While we wait for the triumphant return of the Saleen-tuned Focus and Contour, why don’t you check out our Media Page for our massive gallery of all things Saleen. Enjoy!

2005 Saleen S7 Twin Turbo: A Quick Look
December 6, 2004 — A standing-room only audience was in attendance at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show to witness the unveiling of the new S7 Twin Turbo.
Looking fast yet standing still, the LizStick-red S7 Twin Turbo sported a new 750 horspower V8 producing 700 lb-ft of torque. Numerous engineering changes were required to incorporate the addition of the twin-ball-bearing and water-cooled Saleen-Garrett turbochargers featuring whopping 44-mm wastegates and providing 5.5 psi of boost. Dual electric fuel pumps now feed the array of high-capacity, return-less, 52-lb/hr fuel injectors. A re-calibrated Saleen PowerFlash computer handles engine management.
Putting power to the ground is a new six-speed transaxle mated to larger Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, 275/35R19s up front and 335/30R20s in the rear, adding nearly 1.5 inches to the footprint. Revised suspension geometry and new dual-stage coil springs help provide a softer ride during normal street driving. At speeds of around 100 mph, the second stiffer springs, affected by high-speed downforce, help provide improved handling characteristics when a softer ride is no longer desired.
To attain higher speeds and improve stability, revised front and rear diffusers provide a 40 percent reduction in areo drag and a 60 percent increase in down force. While high-speed performance testing has yet to be finalized, the estimated top speed is an impressive 240 mph.
The 2005 S7 Twin Turbo — America’s premiere supercar — has an MSRP of $555,000. Compared to its competition (which will have a hard time keeping-up) it’s a bargain.
The LA Auto Show is open to the public from January 7-16, 2005 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Also on display at the Saleen booth is the 2005 S281 Supercharged Mustang and the N20 Focus.
Mustang fans will also see the new Mustang convertible at the Ford booth. More information about the show is available at: http://www.laautoshow.com.

This was a great event for the Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club. We had a bunch of SOEC club members stopping by to have the chance to get Steve’s autograph and also check out the cars.
There were two lucky winners of the Saleen Book that were signed by Steve to the winners.
Steve had taken a red eye flight Sat Morning just to come out for a few hours. We, the SOEC greatly appreciate Steve taking time out of his busy schedule just to spend a few hours with us just to turn around and fly back home.
We look forward in seeing everyone that makes it out to the SOEC Driving Event as well as the Saleen & SOEC Car Show in two weeks.
