“There is a great passion for these vehicles and the Saleen brand in general”
By: MIKE BUMBECK on October 12, 2016
Original Article: HAGERTY.COM
Ford established a winning formula of shipping assembly-line Mustangs to specialty companies for conversion into near-racing specials. Credit Carroll Shelby during the 1960s for inspiring this practice. At the dawn of the 1970s, the Boss 429 emerged from the Kar Kraft facility in Brighton, Mich., destined for showdowns against Hemi-powered competitors. The ’80s saw this tradition continue to third-generation Fox-body Mustangs from Saleen, a California tuner shop.
Though Mustang traditionalists may angrily shake a fistful of collapsed carburetor floats toward the sky at the thought of any car built after 1972 being collectible, the age window of what’s considered classic progresses. The ’80s, along with cassette decks, body-color mesh wheels, flared fenders and fade-stripe graphics, are powering into the present with fuel-injected V-8 power.
For 1986 the Saleen Mustang packed a 200-horsepower 5.0-liter High Output (HO) V-8 with tubular headers and dual exhaust, backed by a five-speed Borg-Warner transmission. The Saleen aero treatment meshed with 16×7 Riken alloy wheels, Racecraft suspension and ’80s-perfect striping. A three-spoke Momo steering wheel, Hurst shifter and sports seats met an optional radar detector in the cabin. A Saleen Mustang so equipped could hold .88 G on the skidpad and top 140 mph, according to Ford’s marketing materials.
After transforming just three factory stockers into Saleen Mustangs in 1984, production increased to just over 200 by 1986, well over 700 by 1988 and nearly 900 for 1989. Steve Saleen took his Mustang racing knowledge and transferred it to a series of cars that honed his company’s formula of suspension and power upgrades, including select builds that boosted acceleration, via a supercharger.
Ford had offered supercharging in 1957—a factory-installed McCulloch/Paxton centrifugal blower—and as an option in the 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350. Saleen resurrected the practice for Fox-body Mustangs with Paxton units. A 1984 model [1985 model sic] was the first outfitted, but it took until 1992 for development to conclude and the Saleen/Vortech supercharger option to become available.
These early-’90s supercharged Saleen specials are among the most coveted as an economic recession, combined with the approaching demise of the Fox-body, resulted in a drop in Saleen Mustang production in 1990-93, with just 476 Saleen Mustangs built. Production revived to 1,225 in 1994-98 with the debut of the SN-95 Mustang and ramped up to more than 4,000 constructed in 1999-2004.
The resurgence of the Fox-body has been good for the Saleen Mustang and its devotees; the Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club currently has 5,000 members worldwide. The club’s president, Jim Dvorak, shed some light on the current state of enthusiasm. A renewed interest in all things ’80s, together with limited Saleen production, has seen the collector market for Fox-body examples trending upward in recent years.
“There is a great passion for these vehicles and the Saleen brand in general,” Dvorak said. “A lot of the trading is underground. A lot of the special cars are purchased privately and never advertised. The auction results can be a little misleading in some cases.”
Original condition Saleen Mustangs can fetch more than modified examples, and Saleen keeps documentation on every car built, with unique history in some cases able to influence value. The good news is that getting into an era-defining collectible that has a connection to a strong community of like-minded enthusiasts doesn’t cost a million dollars.

The S197 Saleen Extreme series represent some of the wildest Mustangs from Saleen Automotive’s extensive history. Leaving no mystery as to why this late-model Mustang continues in popularity 10-years after introduction.
Our feature vehicle, 07-0050E was ordered and delivered through Sill-Terhar Ford in Broomfield Colorado with a staggering suggested MSRP of $96,104.00. Model year 2007 introduced forged 5-spoke wheels as standard equipment for the Extreme series. Additional standard features were HID lighting, Rockford Fosgate® Punch trunk mounted amplifier and styling bar (for convertible models). Optional equipment where chrome finish wheels and Saleen custom Beryllium Orange paint.
By the numbers:
From 2005 through 2008, it is believed Saleen Inc produced 14 Beryllium Orange Mustangs. This exterior color was discontinued for the 2009 model year. Of the 14 produced, 8 were Extreme models. Of these 8, 3 were 2007 model year cars. Of these 3, two were coupes and one was a convertible. This convertible was produced by Saleen’s Troy Michigan facility.
Of the 269 known production records for 2005-2007 S281 Extreme models, 7 appear to have come from the Troy Michigan facility. This is why 07-0050E features body color under the hood. Custom paint cars from Michigan tend to have this trait, while Irvine custom paint cars tend to have flat black under their hoods.

BARN FIND
I call it a barn find because it has basically been sitting in my garages over the years (and even temporarily in a barn). While not perfect, it is close! Completely stock 1989 Saleen 89-0352 with only 52,455 miles that literally drives and functions exactly as it did when I bought it (Numerous items have been replaced over time to keep it in top shape, but every part has always been OEM/FoMoCo/Saleen). My first new car was special-ordered in Austin, TX. Since then it has moved with me to Dallas, San Francisco, Denver and Richmond, VA. It has been driven sparingly over the years and always garaged. I love it and always will, but I simply don’t use it like I should. I truly want someone who loves these cars to have it and enjoy it on a more frequent basis. For those that love Saleens, you will be blown away by all of the documents that I have from back in 1988 (year it was purchased). I have all the brochures, the window stickers, every document provided by Saleen and Ford. It has been fun to relive the memories and will be fun for the right buyer to have this for the future.
THE GOOD
As you can see in the pictures, the car is gorgeous. It is not a trailer queen, but you would be hard pressed to find a more beautiful representation of a fox-body Saleen that has actually been driven. Interior is truly a flawless 10/10. The car drives and shifts perfectly and the AC blows ice cold. It is a lot of fun to drive and draws constant accolades from anyone that sees it.
THE BAD
The exterior is an 8/10 mainly due to spider-webbing in the ground effects. This is from the only accident this car was ever in back in 1991, and it was self-induced! We forgot to set the parking brake on our manually-equipped Explorer and later found that the Explorer had rolled down the driveway right into the front of the Saleen. Not a good day :)! If you want it as a daily driver, I wouldn’t change anything. If you want it as a show car that can be driven, then you will want to purchase a replacement ground effects kit ($689 on LMR.com). The only other major blemish is a small area above the left rear wheel well that was rubbed off while the car was being “professionally” moved from CO to VA. Other minor issues are the standard fox-body issues, like the black window moldings around the rear triangle Windows which simply fade over time no matter what you do!
I would happily answer any questions about the car and will provide all of the original documentation with the sale. While the money is important, I truly want to find the right home for this 28 year old time capsule. If you would like other pictures or videos, let me know and I will gladly provide. Anyone is welcome to setup time to come drive it. You won’t be disappointed.

Since the 1980s, Steve Saleen has been THE source for Mustang owners wanting to get the most out of their pony cars. Saleen’s successful racing programs in SCCA and IMSA road racing filtered down into his road cars. Saleen Mustangs are sought after for their handling prowess, increased horsepower and distinctive good looks. Quite often, Saleen cars that appear on the market are made up from aftermarket components and aren’t genuine factory built examples. We are offering this genuine, fully documented, factory-built 1996 S351 Speedster with just over 9,000 miles from new.
According to the Saleen Registry, this car, number 96-0032, is one of just 10 S351 Speedsters built in 1996 and one of 3 finished in Rio Red and is one of one with these exact options and colors. It was originally built for the CEO of a company that sponsored Saleen’s racing efforts in the 1990s and it was a fully-loaded show piece. Equipment includes the base S-351 package, T-Code (Recaro Interior, Alcon Brakes), 3.55:1 Gears, Saleen Sound System, Speedster Package and a Wheel/Tire upgrade.
In addition to those options, an additional $3,700 in 1997 Prototype additions were fitted. This included a six-speed gearbox, Auburn limited slip differential, Koni suspension, Racecraft rear lower control arms, aluminum front bushings, and Pro short throw shifter. The combined packages and options totaled $36,249 – and that doesn’t include the cost of the base Mustang!
The clean Carfax report verifies just two owners from new, the original owner keeping the car for fourteen years, while the second owner kept the car stored in a climate controlled garage during his tenure. The car presents in very good overall condition showing no signs of crash damage or repairs. The Rio Red paint is in very good order, with a few stone chips apparent, mainly on the front bumper, but overall it presents well excellent gloss. Panel fit is good and the special Saleen graphics are in similarly good condition. The polished wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tires and are in excellent condition.
Inside, the Recaro seats are embroidered with Saleen logos and trimmed in leather. The leather is in good condition, with some slight wear showing on the driver’s outer bolster. The rest of the interior trim is excellent and all electrical functions work as they should. The original Saleen audio system has been upgraded to a Kenwood Excelon series receiver and Memphis Audio amplifier. The original radio is included. The original power soft top has a heated glass window and is in excellent order, operating smoothly.
On the road, the Saleen shines. The Koni suspension is aggressive but not harsh and the bespoke Saleen Racecraft suspension parts work to make this car handle exceptionally well. Grip is phenomenal thanks to the Auburn limited slip. The six speed transmission takes a firm hand and the shifts are positive, with well-spaced ratios. With just over 9,000 miles from new the car feels tight and fresh. This factory-built Saleen S351 has all the makings of a future classic – rarity, great looks and outstanding performance.
Sale includes fitted cover, original books, Saleen invoices, Speedster tonneau, soft tonneau, cockpit cover, original radio, two original keys and fobs.

* Six-Speed Gearbox
* Racecraft Conrol Arms and Aluminum Bushings

You are looking at a nearly flawless example of the Foxbody Saleen. With 37,900 miles, this car has been meticulously taken care of. I am the second owner. I purchased the car to be a driver, and while I have driven it, it shows like a 10,000 mile car. The car is not 100% factory stock. The prior owner changed out the stereo system, installed a radar detection system, an auto alarm, subframe connectors, and a Magnaflow exhaust. I did not like the exhaust system, so I installed an SLP Loudmouth system and love the sound. Approximately 1,000 miles ago, I also had professionally installed a Kenne-Bell Blowzilla system. My instructions to Brads Custom Auto was for the car to be 100% reliable. With the custom tune they developed, the car put down 280 horsepower to the rear wheels. I have all of the pieces and parts to restore the car back to it’s prior induction condition. I would give the black/grey interior with grey cloth original Flofit seats a 10/10 for condition. I would give the exterior a 9/10 for condition. There are a few very small paint chips on the front bumper. The paint has a dime size crack on the rear deck, and the Saleen striping package has a small (less than 1/4″) scratch on the passenger side.
I am happy to take any pictures that a serious buyer would like to see. Buyer will be responsible for arranging shipping and all shipping cost. I will provide reasonable assistance in delivering the car for transport. I have used Thomas Sunday Auto Transport in the past.
This is an incredibly beautiful car in near perfect condition. I am well known in the Mustang circles in the Seattle, WA area. Feel free to talk to Brad Seibold, the owner of Brad’s Custom Auto about the condition of this car or any of my cars. You will not be disappointed.

Angel Muniz of New York is a lifelong “Saleen Freak.” Having owned two previous S281 “New Edge” coupes, Angel recently upgraded to a modified Supercharged Speedster. As a child, Angel loved reading car magazines, wishing he could one day own a vehicle worthy of a centerfold feature. For the past year Angel was on the lookout for a “special” Saleen Mustang and found 01-0643, an S281 Supercharged Speedster with a rare optional Ford white leather interior and white top. Angel’s surprise bonus to this find was the history of 01-0643 being a former Street Thunder magazine and calendar car.
Produced during May 2001 and shipped to American Ford, 01-0643 contained the following Saleen equipment: Tire Upgrade, 10″ rear wheels, painted door panels, floor mats, 13″ front brakes, chrome wheels, tonneau bag and stripe delete.
From model year 1999 through 2002, Saleen Performance produced 12 Mustangs with optional Ford white leather seating. For 2001, Saleen converted five white seat cars. Of those, four were painted Oxford White and two were equipped with the optional automatic transmission.
