As the introductory model to the Saleen S302 model lineup, the 302 White Label touts an incredible list of features in a single package. Keeping with the formula that Saleen uses to produce its instantly recognizable vehicles, the White Label model adds to the value element through increased horsepower, handling and styling. Utilizing a 302 cubic inch V8 engine this pony produces 450HP through a naturally aspirated configuration that keeps power where it should be, on demand. In addition to increased horsepower, each Saleen White label model also receives additional upgrades including Aerodynamics and Aesthetics, braking, and Saleen specific suspension components that all work together balancing out the ‘Speed, Science and Style’ trifecta that is embedded in each Saleen vehicle produced. As part of the Saleen manufacturing process, each vehicle is cataloged and serialized with its own unique Saleen VIN, a process that lends itself to the collectability and high resale values that Saleen vehicles have been known for over the past 30 years. Handling on the 302 White Label model is maintained by the Saleen S4 bushings, links and specific-rate suspension springs with ground control being managed by the Saleen styled 20″ wheels and Z rated tires. Aerodynamics and Aesthetics on the 302 White Label include a rear valance redesign which incorporates a S302 specific package consisting of a high downforce rear spoiler atop a Saleen decklid insert. Additional Saleen specific aesthetics include model specific interior and exterior badging, reinforcing the amazing lineage that makes up this Saleen vehicle. (Info courtesy of Saleen.com)

ONE OF JUST 6 FOX-BODY SALEENS EVER BUILT IN BRIGHT CALYPSO GREEN

On Second Thought: One bite deserves another

93-0082 Saleen Mustang
93-0082 Saleen Mustang

Eric English
May 29, 2015

Tom Rice had locked onto a favorite Mustang genre… until this 1993 Saleen came along.

The nature of Ford’s Mustang (and cars in general, for that matter) is that the breed tends to get better as new models debut. Understand that we’re not necessarily talking about styling here, but otherwise there’s a pretty consistent trend toward better drivability, safety, quality, power, economy, and technology with each new generation. For certain there are occasional stumbles when our theme doesn’t hold true, but there can be little argument over the long haul.

93-0082 Saleen Mustang
93-0082 Saleen Mustang

Tom Rice has personally experienced the above phenomenon, and despite time marching on, he thought he had locked into a favorite genre some years ago. The generation of Tom’s obsession turned out to be the 1994-1998 SN95s (Saleen S351s, to be specific, of which he currently owns two). That the 1994 Mustang was a leap ahead of the 1979-1993 Fox platform is a given, with improved chassis rigidity, standard four-wheel disc brakes, dual airbags, and, in rare situations, more cubic inches. That would be the 1994-1998 Saleen S351s and the 1995 Cobra R—both featuring 351 Windsors, some of the Saleens being supercharged. So what could cause Tom to rethink his allegiance? The very 1993 you see here.

Tom stumbled upon this Fox Saleen in 2010 via the Saleen Club of America’s website. He was struck by the fact that the car was one of just six Saleens ever built in Bright Calypso Green (one in 1991, five in 1993). Tom was also struck by the car’s recently installed 392ci engine, realizing that with lighter weight and a big-inch Windsor, this Fox might well offer everything he liked about the SN95 S351s and then some. As luck would have it, the car was within just a few miles of his home, allowing for a quick meet and greet of buyer and seller.

“Once I saw it and drove it, I was hooked,” says Tom. “The factory Recaros are the same as in my 1995 Saleen, which made me feel right at home.”

As Tom describes it, the 1993 needed a bit of TLC, but you’ve got to take that assessment with a grain of salt considering the current owner’s standards of near-perfection. However you care to describe it, it’s clear that Tom has taken the car to another level completely, replacing the stripes and doing some minor paint touchup, detailing and dialing in the engine, upping the ante on the factory modified suspension, and completely making over the braking system.

The former owner had surely put a good foundation in place after he blew up the original 302 with help from a blower. The replacement turned out to be a Ford Racing 392-inch M-6009-D392 short-block, finished off with AFR 185 cylinder heads and a Comp XE282 cam. To this baseline, Tom added the ported Lightning lower intake and Hogan’s sheetmetal upper, Accufab 75mm throttle-body, MAC long tubes, Anderson PMS, and untold numbers of other detail items. He also chose to add a gear to the drivetrain, installing a Tremec T56 via a Stiffler’s crossmember and driveshaft safety loop. A 3.55-geared, 31-spline 8.8 brings up the rear.

93-0082 Saleen Mustang
93-0082 Saleen Mustang

To make sure the big 392ci doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the car, the original Racecraft suspension was upgraded with Bilstein dampers and Maximum Motorsports’ bumpsteer kit and rear control arms. The brakes, however, are a different story altogether. The front install incorporates 1994 spindles, 13-inch rotors with aluminum hats, and the Baer 6P two-piece forged calipers. “Fourteen-inch rotors would’ve been nice,” says Tom, “but I’ve got an affinity for the 17-inch Speedline wheels, which are original to this car. That’s why I used the 13-inch rotors, but they’re 1.15 inches thick and will take a ton of abuse”.

Tom is quick to credit Rick Pojman at Baer for his technical help in getting the rears brakes installed. The six-piston units are a bit unusual in a rear application, but after having difficulty getting four-piston calipers centered on the installed rotors, Tom tried the six pots and found them easier to work with.

The results of Tom’s build are satisfying and in his mind, not necessarily better than his S351’s, but different and similar all at the same time. Driving a Fox is a largely different experience than a SN95, with a completely different cockpit (in this case with the cool and rare factory black threads) and totally different sheetmetal. Nevertheless, strikingly similar underpinnings yield familiar characteristics when you’re behind the wheel. A naturally aspirated stroker small-block doesn’t know what chassis it’s bolted into. If weight is comparable, performance will be too. For Tom, it now comes down to appreciating two distinct Mustang genres, with a healthy respect and enthusiasm for both.

Truth be told, like most of us, Tom likes virtually all Mustangs. Sometimes it just comes down to learning one or two inside and out, and sticking with them despite the inevitable progress of the latest and greatest.

SALEEN SSC (89-0036) ATTACKS THE NÜRBURGRING

By: DALE LOMAS on May 28, 2015
Original Article: BRIDGETOGANTRY.COM

Spotted: Time Machine at the Nürburgring

As a guy who drives all the latest sportscars as his job, you might think I don’t care about the older cars in the carpark. But nothing could be further from the truth.

But when I saw this perfectly-preserved Time Machine in the carpark at the recent GranTurismo Events trackday, I just had to share it…

Because in a car park full of amazing machines, this old ’80s Ford really stood out. It’s unconventional, it’s old and at only one known example in Europe, it’s also pretty damn rare!

It’s a Saleen SSC, a track-ready, Fox-body Mustang with a 330hp V8. At first glance, you might be forgiven for thinking there’s nothing simpler than this American iron. But there’s some cool stuff here… check out the ‘high-tech’ suspension:

Built by Monroe, the damping rates can be controlled from inside the button. Three settings, Firm, Normal and Soft. It might not be much compared to todays active dampers, but I found it interesting!

Fitted as standard with a basic rear rollcage, and trimmed in matching white/black/yellow leather, it’s like sitting in time machine. Albeit one powered by a Ford V8.

“The original leather seats are no good on track though,” admits owner and professional Mustang fan Goran. “That’s why I’ve fitted the period Recaros for this event.”

89-0036SSC
89-0036SSC

I also suspect that rubber isn’t period either, but let’s not get pedantic over such a curious and interesting car! From the snake’s head key-ring, to the graphic equaliser, this is a car with history.

As Goran went out for another lap, I have to admit I was a little jealous. This is a Time Machine I’d love to take a lap in.

SHOW ‘N GO: BECKI BELCHER’S 2008 S281 3-VALVE

Home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is where I reside. Growing up as a tomboy hasn’t changed much these days, I still want to do those same things. Go fast, get dirty and never come inside.

My mother drove a 1970 Grabber Blue Mach 1 and my father owned many types of muscle cars including the Mustang. When I was young all I remember ever wanting was to be a race car driver. I remember the year I got my first race track to assemble when I was a little girl, I was fascinated. Mustangs, racing and competing have always been a part of who I am.

In 2011, I purchased my first Mustang, a 2008 Saleen S281 #26. When the deal was sealed, I packed an overnight bag and headed to Georgia the very next day. For many years, the Mustang was a show car, last year all that changed. I wanted to see how the Mustang would perform on the 1320. The first pass became an addition that I have embraced and continued. I love making passes and the challenge of a manual is exhilarating.

Last year, I competed in True Street and this year I am competing in the NMRA’s Super Stang Class. Running on the Pro Tree and up against some of the baddest guys with some impressive records was a bit intimidating at first, but I am taking all that in stride and becoming a better racer by the day. Racing, writing and taking pictures of Mustangs makes me happy, it’s my passion and a dream come true.

1989 Saleen Mustang Bumper Number # 624, color combo Oxford White / Silver Graphics, this Saleen is one of only 174. Only 731 Saleens were produced in 1989, of those 546 were hatchbacks, 185 were White, and only 174 were White Hatchbacks with gray interior. This is a very nice real Saleen. The car is 100% stock except the window tint. This Saleen only has 65,321 miles. Everything works on the car, including the ash tray closes, back hatch stays open and latches, arm rest is not broke (all common broken parts on this year mustang). The car was originally ordered in and purchased from Lewis Ford in Fayetteville Arkansas; it has spent its entire life in Arkansas. The second owner traded the car back into Lewis Ford in 2008, I have owned the car since then. Over the past 7 years the car has sat in my garage under a car cover, I have driven the car less than 200 miles. I bought the car because of the history and personally knowing both previous owners. I would keep the car but my wife and I just had our 2nd child and it’s time for the car to go.

Carfax and History report are both clean; this is a very nice car. All windows work, door locks, AC, lights, blinkers, etc. I recently had the oil changed, fuel filter, air filter, ac, and coolant all changed and serviced. The graphics and decals are not faded. You will notice in the pictures that the car does have the vin tags on the Hood, both front fenders, both doors, both Quarter panels and the hatch.

The car is equipped with the factory Saleen options listed below plus the standard Saleen Options:
* Race craft Suspension
* 5 Lug conversion with 4 wheel SVO-type disc brakes and Saleen 16” wheels
* Salees Interior
* Saleen Guage Cluster
* Saleen Pioneer Stereo and Equilizer
* Saleen Ground effects
* Racecraft Chassis Brace

Optional Equipment from Saleen Include:
* 3.55 Gears, Cruise Control

The condition of the car is exceptionally good, especially for the year, I would not be scared to drive it across country. If I had to be extremely picky and fault the car in any way here is how I would; it has a cell phone antenna on the back window, the Saleen plaque on the inside is discolored (like someone used a cleaning chemical on it), the tint has some purple fade in it, there are maybe 1-2 small dings, the tires have a lot of tread but showing a small sign of weather cracking, and two places I pointed out in the pictures that have had touch up paint on them. None of the above would scare me about the car, I am a mustang enthusiast and extremely picky about the condition of my cars and want to be very transparent to anyone looking at the car. The title is clean and clear. Email me with any other questions, video or picture request.

ULTRARARE SALEEN SA-30 2014 FORD MUSTANG!

Dirty Thirty: When Ed Hinker and Steve Saleen began talks to build Ed a custom Mustang, Ed never imagined that the project would evolve into the ultrarare Saleen SA-30 Mustang

Stephanie Davies

Photos By: Drew Phillips

Ed and Lisa Hinker of Sturgis, South Dakota, are Mustang enthusiasts—and that’s putting it lightly. They’ve owned countless Mustangs (many of them of the Saleen variety) and number Steve Saleen among their personal friends. That said, the 2014 Saleen SA-30 Mustang seen here wasn’t even a blip on Ed’s radar when he began talking to Steve about building him a unique Mustang.

“He doesn’t build one-off cars very often,” Ed says. “At SEMA we talked about building me a car.”

SA-30 302 Mustang #01

It wasn’t just any car that he had his heart set on. Ed wanted his car to feature throwback cues like the rear seat delete with exposed spare tire. They also discussed painting the finished product gray.

After the ideas were set in motion, Ed tells us that they ran into more than one hiccup. A full glass roof was planned with “frost touch”, but the glass kept wrinkling in production. The final product took about a year to build and was planned to debut at the Mustang’s 50th Anniversary celebration in Charlotte, North Carolina, in April 2014. Not long before then, Ed got a call from Steve Saleen.

“He told me he had good news and bad news. The good news was that the glass roof was finally working, but the bad (maybe not so bad) news was that the car was white.”

Ed was surprised but not at all put off by the news. It came to be that Steve had rolled Ed’s ideas into the production of his Saleen SA-30 vehicles, which celebrated 30 years of Saleen and its racing heritage.

SA-30 302 Mustang #01

You see, only 30 Saleen SA-30 vehicles were produced: 10 each of the Saleen 620 Camaro, the 570 Challenger, and of course the 302 Mustang. According to Ed, this particular SA-30 is unique in that it was the first one produced and the only one equipped with a rear seat delete and frost touch glass roof.

When Ed saw the car for the first time, he loved it, but he thought something was missing. “He took it back with him from Charlotte to add yellow piping on the seats to bring the exterior styling inside,” says Ed.

SA-30 302 Mustang #01
SA-30 302 Mustang #01

Each SA-30 Mustang is equipped with a stock 302 with forged internals and a compression ratio of 10:1. A Saleen intake sits atop the 302 with a 88mm throttle-body. Saleen high-performance headers with 3-inch pipes carry exhaust away from the engine.

Of course, a Saleen wouldn’t be complete without a supercharger. A Saleen Twin-Screw liquid-cooled supercharger producing 15 maximum pounds of boost powers the SA-30 to a cool 675 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. Ed told us his Mustang has run a best quarter-mile time of 11.2 seconds at 121 mph.

SA-30 302 Mustang #01

A TR3650 six-speed transmission allows Ed to slam gears whenever the craving arises. A full Saleen S4 suspension keeps the Cooper tires glued to the ground in the corners.

The striking Tire Smoke Pearl White paint offset by yellow and gray accents sets the SA-30 apart. The Saleen five-spoke forged wheels are color-matched to the body—a stunning detail. Body modifications include Saleen aerodynamic body parts: a downforce wing, a butterfly induction hood, and ground effects.

Going back to the interior that Steve had rebooted for Ed, leather and alcantara two-tone performance seating with yellow piping really pops with the aforementioned rear seat delete (with exposed forged color-matched spare), Saleen billet aluminum brace, and frost touch glass roof.

The SA-30 joins Ed and Lisa’s collection, which includes a variety of super-unique and rare cars and numerous other Saleens and Fords. Ed says, “I just like unique cars. I don’t drive them very often . . . mostly to shows and things like that. We’ll take them for a drive once in a while. I’d be surprised if any of them had more than a thousand miles on them.”

Ed does venture out to the Sturgis Mustang Rally each year with a specimen from his collection—a show he convinced Steve to experience as well. Ed is one of the organizers of the huge show, which drew around 1,000 Mustangs last year and takes place during Labor Day weekend each year. And you just never know what incredible vehicle Ed will show up with next!
