AUTOGUIDE: FOX BODY MUSTANGS COULD BE THE NEXT COLLECTOR CRAZE

By: SAMI HAJ-ASSAAD on January 19, 2017
Original Article: AUTOGUIDE.COM

Fox Body Mustangs Could be the Next Collector Craze

Could the Ford Mustangs from your youth really be worth anything today?

1984 Mustang SVO
1984 Mustang SVO

During the recent Barrett-Jackson auctions in Arizona, a few third-generation Mustangs hit the auction block, and when they came through on the other side of the platform, they were significantly more valuable than you would have thought.

According to Hagerty representative Jonathon Klinger, “Low-mile Fox-bodied Mustangs sold well on Wednesday, with a 16-mile 1990 7 Up Limited Edition convertible selling for $82,500, an as-new 1989 Mustang 5.0 LX hatchback selling for $71,500, and a 7-mile 1985 SVO fetching $63,800.”

1987 Saleen Mustang

But are these models and sales numbers outliers? Could we really see Fox Body Mustangs crest the $100,000 mark anytime soon?

“A $100,000 Fox Body Mustang? Never say never, but it would have to be a truly pristine example of a rare edition—a Cobra R, or an early SSP like a 1982 California Highway Patrol—to hit $100,000” said Klinger. “Maybe the 7UP Edition given yesterday’s $82,500 result, but those seem to be a mixed bag and I think the novelty of a 16-mile time capsule really was the story there.”

In fact, Klinger explained that recent auctions saw that special edition Fox Body Mustangs get far more attention than more common models. “Trends for the special editions are up but the more typical Fox Body Mustangs are holding steady.”

He brings up the results from the Mecum auction in Kissimmee earlier this month. “A 7 UP Edition (just like that $82,500 one sold this week) with 830 miles went for just $25,300. Another with 14,000 miles sold for $16,000. A rare 1993 SVT Cobra R didn’t sell but hammered at $60,000. A 1993 “Special Service Package” (higher performance fox body made for law enforcement) went for $25,000. But higher volume Base, LX, and GT models were all inline with trends. Four sold for between $5,000 and $10,000, two others unsold with $11,000 hammer prices.” Now that’s more reasonable…

Basically, he’s saying that those recent results from Barrett-Jackson were a bit excessive. “But, the fact that a Fox Body Mustang in general generated that much bidding enthusiasm demonstrates these cars are becoming more collectible, especially to the eyes of the younger buyers who lusted after these cars in their youth.” He says that Hagerty expects the market for good condition Fox Body Mustangs to gain more interest, which should increase their value over time. “The key is to find a well persevered example that hasn’t been highly modified or suffered from years of neglect.”

Third generation Mustangs, which were available between 1979–1993 are called the Fox Body Mustangs because they used Ford’s Fox Platform, which was one of the company’s most used architectures. It was used in compact cars like the Ford Fairmont, and large luxury cars like the Lincoln Continental Mark VII.

The Mustang’s made during this time were popular for a number of reasons. They were made in a number of body styles, including a notchback, coupe and convertible or with t-tops. This generation of Mustang also first introduced the idea of a turbocharged four-cylinder model, called the SVO, which has been resurrected in a way with the modern EcoBoost Mustang.

REAR VIEW: 86-0068 & GRASSROOTS RACING

PHOTOS & TEXT EXCERPTS: GEORGE CHABAL

“Original owner with 10,000 miles, original paint and interior. 86-0068 was special ordered as a stripped down Mustang from Ford and drop shipped to Saleen Autosport for the Saleen conversion. Car was purchased to compete in SCCA Solo II.”

86-0068 Saleen Mustang
86-0068 Saleen Mustang, competition debut

The ’80s were a relaunch of factory-backed racing efforts from Ford Motor Company. Earlier in the decade, with the birth of Special Vehicle Operations, FMC became a global juggernaut in all forms of vehicle racing through their Ford Motorsport program lead by Michael Kranefuss. While Detroit was busy forming Goliath; a little-known Californian upstart run by Steve Saleen approached the Motorsport operation with his plan to remanufacture 5-Liter Mustangs into an uncompromised, signature series, street-legal, niche performance vehicle. With SVOs blessing, the Saleen Mustang concept became a welcomed addition to FMCs Motorsport agenda and their “Racing into the Future” marketing vision.

“Saleen had said this car was what they would have done if they were to sell a R-version to the public. At the time they were out of the Hurst shifters for the street cars, but since they knew I would be racing this one; Saleen took a backup shifter from their race team to install into 86-0068.”

86-0068 Saleen Mustang
86-0068 Saleen Mustang

1986 was Saleen Autosport’s debut year into SCCA road racing. Their ’86 model year signature package was approved for SCCA Showroom Stock Endurance Series in class SS/GT. Saleen would compete with SCCA’s entire calendar of events; winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Mosport race late in the season. While the factory racing team was busy scraping paint with Porsche and Corvette on a national stage, effort was also made to endorse Saleen Mustang sales to regional racers seeking a value added, sanction approved performance package, for their dreams of clinching the checkered flag. Through Saleen Autosport’s grassroots support program; experienced racers could special order a new vehicle and qualify for competition incentives throughout their competition season.

“86-0068 was the first Saleen Mustang shipped to Pennsylvania. After I took delivery Steve Saleen called me and asked if I was willing to take my car to New York for a Koni advertising photo shoot. I mentioned to Steve I had to make sure could take time away from work. When I called back the following day Saleen had made other arrangements because of their short lead time.”

George Chabal, of western Pennsylvania, was one of Saleen Autosport’s earliest competition customers. With an eye on the SCCA Solo II Series, George contacted Steve Saleen on how best to order a new Mustang for club racing. With Steve’s assistance they ordered a Bright Red 5-Liter LX hatchback with tinted glass, light group, power lock group and Ford radio delete. Other equipment would include Saleen’s standard Kenwood sound system, Ford Mustang GT seating and Hurst short-throw shifter; George would arrive to PA SCCA events in style.

86-0068 Saleen Mustang
86-0068 Saleen Mustang

Produced by Saleen Autosport using their facility at Burch Ford in La Habra California and shipped to Bures Ford in early May; 86-0068 was an unusual Saleen Mustang conversion given the lack of air conditioning, power windows and featuring a light grey Momo steering wheel.

For the 1986 model year Saleen produced 201 serialized Mustangs, 198 were street models with three competition prepared vehicles. The body style breakdown of those street models are, 187 hatchbacks and 11 convertibles.

Of the 187 street prepared hatchbacks, it is known that 47 were painted Bright Red (paint code 2R). Of those, 44 featured Charcoal interiors. All 44 were equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions, while 43 were built from the LX 5-Liter platform.

Closer examination of these 44 Bright Red with Charcoal interior conversions reveal, 35 were equipped with Saleen’s Kenwood Stereo. Of the 187 street prepared hatchbacks 86-0068 is one of three with delete features and one of three known with a light grey Momo steering wheel.

2008 Ford Mustang Saleen S302E Extreme Convertible

08-0024 S302 Extreme Speedster

Vehicle to be offered for Auction sale January 19th – 22nd, 2017 at Russo and Steele’s 17th Annual Scottsdale Arizona Auction at the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Please contact us for more information.

As the last super-performance car developed under the guidance of company founder Steve Saleen, the S302E Extreme was also the most powerful Saleen Mustang available from Ford dealers when new, with 620 horsepower and peak torque of 600 pounds-feet on tap. As a top-level model aimed solely at the most serious drivers and collectors, the Extreme was a low-volume item with 25 coupes and 6 convertibles built for 2008 and 2009DCRN1 . Just 4 convertibles were built for 2008 and 2 of them were finished in eye-popping Beryllium Orange. One of those 2 cars was owned by Steve Saleen, and the other is the stunning example offered here. Both cars feature slightly different options, making this S302E Extreme convertible a true 1 of 1.

This S302E Extreme was Saleen’s top performer when new, with its aluminum 3-valve V-8 engine stroked to 302 cubic inches and equipped with forged aluminum pistons, forged steel rods, and crank, custom CNC-ported aluminum heads. A Saleen Series VI Integrated screw type, two-stage intercooled air-to-water supercharger provide induction in concert with a high-performance cam and valve springs and custom 39 lb fuel injectors.

MUSTANG360: TRAVIS SMITH’S 89-0374

By: MICHAEL JOHNSON on January 10, 2017
Original Article: MUSTANGANDFORDS.COM

This 1989 Saleen puts out 691-rwhp, but why stop there?

Travis Smith’s Number 374 Saleen now boasts a T56 transmission, Baer brakes, and True Forged Wheels

89-0374 Saleen Mustang
89-0374 Saleen Mustang

Even when we’re “done” building a Mustang, we’re never truly finished modifying it. Case in point, Travis Smith’s 1989 Saleen already has a boatload of modifications. It features a Vortech-supercharged Kuntz and Co. 337ci combination with a Ford Performance R-block, Roush-prepped AFR 205 heads, a custom Comp cam, a TMoss-ported Saleen intake, an MSD ignition, an Aeromotive fuel system, a Snow Performance meth kit, and a Meziere electric water pump. All told, the boosted small block is good for 691-rwhp thanks to a Powercurve Motorsports tune. However, if these mods are good, more mods won’t hurt, right?

Since Travis bought the car from fellow Southeastern Foxbodies pal Troy Raby, he had to change up a few things to make it his own. To that end, he sent the car over to Boosted Performance’s Donnie Salem for a few drivetrain upgrades.

A Tremec 3550 used to reside behind the Kuntz and Co. 337ci mill, but Boosted Performance’s Donnie Salem changed that out in favor of a Tremec T56 Magnum six-speed. Boosted Performance has done all the work on Travis’ past Mustangs, which include a Coyote-swap Fox GT, a 2003 Cobra that made 650-rwhp, and his other current 2014 Mustang GT. “I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my cars,” Travis says of Donnie.

While at Donnie’s place, in went a Tremec T56 Magnum with a McLeod clutch and an MGW shifter. The car previously had a Tremec 3550 with a 26-spline input shaft. A new Fox-width 8.8 also went in the car, and the car’s Baer brakes were painted to match the car’s new True Forged Victory 18-inch wheels.

With these drivetrain upgrades done, the car has an appointment with Fox Mustang Restoration for an interior overhaul. We’ll have another update once that round of upgrades is complete.

Boosted Performance also added a Fox-length 8.8 so Travis could run an 18x10 True Forged wheel out back. The new rear features a Cobra differential, 3.73 gears, and 31-spline axles. For those measuring from home, that is a Nitto 305/35 drag radial.
