1988 Saleen Mustang number 689 for sale
Saleen may be making headlines these days for working on the Tesla Model S, but its history and bread-and-butter is all about the Ford Mustang. The rear-wheel-drive Dearborn pony cars singlehandedly put the company on the map in the ’80s. Founder Steve Saleen was already a talented American racing driver when he started the venture, and like many auto industry businesses before him, Saleen went to the track to prove his vehicles’ worth. Now, there’s a chance to buy one of those early racers.
The 1988 Saleen Mustang was upgraded with Monroe shock absorbers, Pioneer sound system, and a Saleen 170 speedo/tach, Saleen body kit, wheels and all signature appointments. All convertible Saleens were converted from LX Mustang models. They all had factory 5.0L V8 engines with optional supercharger, five-speed manual transmission, this car was imported into Australia in 1998 and right hand drive converted for a lady who also had the supercharger removed. It changed hands in 2002 and has been owned by the same owner since and been part of a car collection in Victoria. The original supercharger was sold and fitted to a race car and has had a replacement one fitted.
In 1988 Saleen produced 546 Hatchbacks, 137 Convertibles and 25 Hardtop coupes making this number 689 of a total of 708 cars built.

#86 of 1995 as listed in Saleen registry. S351R’s are probably the most profilic and rarest Saleen ever made. Motor trend called this car the thundering, plundering, viper-eating monstrosity!
Authentic, could not verify if car had R code supercharger installed by dealer or after original order. Does come with various documentation…
* Has original vortech fuel pressure regulator mounted on firewall, which has been bypassed.
* Equipped with Tremec quick-ratio 5 speed manual
* Alcon 4 piston front calipers and large 13″ rotors, stops from insane speeds very very quickly.
* Racecraft suspension on all 4 corners, including extra large sway bar.
* Saleen fiberglass rear wing.
* Saleen fiberglass “extractor” hood.
* Griffin aluminum radiator.
* Full Saleen cluster and Boost/Fuel pressure combo gauge set.
* 351 Windsor HO motor, upgraded with ford racing roller rockers, custom Saleen spec’d camshaft, Saleen extrude honed custom intake, Saleen spec’d Edelbrok perform aluminum cylinder heads.
* Cylinder heads machined and MLS head gaskets replaced recently, along with all gaskets and seals. New ford racing wireset, MSD cap/rotor/ignition coil. New plugs.
* Vortech t-trim runs 12psi at 6,000 rpm, made 495RWHP on dyno. Added methanol injection tune since, did not redyno, but people report as much as 20 extra hp on boosted engines. Has brand new clutch set (McLeod street extreme), lightwheel flywheel. Huge injectors were installed along with the Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator, A1000 fuel pump, and kept the inline Vortech T-REX fuel pump. Ran out of fuel on dyno and could not go past 6,000 and 12psi. Tuned completely, drives perfectly at all ranges and conditions. Car is very fast, but has more in it. Needs bigger fuel lines and rails and you could run up to 15psi and likely get 550RWHP on a totally streetable machine with A/C. Car is custom flashed by dyno people.
Car is a DRIVER.
Various small imperfections in the body/paint that are too small to show up in pictures. It shows nicely but is NOT in show condition. Interior in very nice shape, was told car was stolen in California years ago and insurance paid for the only available Saleen Recaro seats available which look like they were in a ’93 Saleen. Rims were also stolen and a factory set installed, have receipt for 3100 rims alone.
Front wheels are 18″ Saleens.
Rear wheels installed now are 17″ Draglites with 325/40/17 Drag radials.
Have rear Saleen 18″ wheels, come with car but Michelin pilots need replaced.
For emission requirement owners: I have the factory converter pipes/H pipe. I deleted them and installed an x pipe to mufflers. Sounds amazing, looks amazing and will keep up with anything on the road. If you have to be checked for emissions you will have to reinstall them. I can do this for you if necessary. Air pump was deleted and bypass pulley installed.
I Replaced the factory 2.73 gears with 3.73 ford racing gears, and installed a high performance rear differential cover. Did not get around to changing speedo gear, so speedometer is off somewhat. I do have original gears, come with car.
I rarely drive this car, that is why I am selling it. Car is #95-86 very rare and has been a blast to own. Have put too much time and money in this car. Please do your research and be considerate when making an offer!
Do not need to sell. Call me with any questions, I know this car and its history well. Brandon 216-798-3996.
Make offer/trade.
Last reported mileage in Carfax was 32,000 miles… don’t know if odometer is correct or replacement cluster was replaced when car was stolen. Says 86,000 miles currently.
500.00 Dollar deposit payable upon auction end. Cash or cashier check/PayPal. Can accept credit cards with 3% fee.
IT IS YOUR JOB TO READ THIS AUCTION AND DESCRIPTION COMPLETELY. PLEASE DO NOT BID IF YOU DO NOT PLAN TO BUY. LETS MAKE A DEAL CALL ME WITH OFFERS.

* Mileage 86,092

1996 – 1998 Steve Saleen had his cars in the Budget rental field. This car is 01B the very first car!
Condition excellent.
Hardtop and Recaros are included.
(2) Recaro Style XLR and Recaro indicates it is an aftermarket that many of the designs you see in many sport and luxury cars.
90-0096 appears to have been a special order car. Either for the first owner or stocking dealer.
In 1990, Wild Strawberry was a non-standard color for Saleen Mustang conversion. This exterior hue would have been an extra cost fee and required a drop-ship chassis (or locating a chassis through a dealer-stock search) to complete the request.
Wild Strawberry was introduced during the 1990 production year and replaced Medium Cabernet on the Mustang color chart. Three Wild Strawberry Saleen Mustangs are believed to have been produced during the 1990 and 1991 model years. One vehicle in each body style, making this color fairly uncommon.
The White & Red Ford leather and Ford stereo EQ sound system presented in 90-0096 would have also been special requests. By choosing these Ford options it deleted both the standard Saleen/FloFit cloth seating and Pioneer sound system during conversion.
By the numbers:
17 Saleen convertibles in 1990 had white leather seating. 13 of these were the special Emerald Green model. Meaning, 4 convertibles were NOT green and had white seating. Two cars were white, one car was Bright Red, the other Strawberry.
For Sale—-
It’s hard to believe that the older Saleen Mustangs are entering the ranks of classics, but consider this: The 79-93 Mustangs are now where the 65-73 Mustangs were in the 90s. They are older cars with a committed following. These limited-production, high-performance rides have held their value even better than a vintage Shelby did at the same age. Shelby Mustangs, of course, have surpassed Saleens in value, if for no other reason than age and availability, but they aren’t as plentiful today as they were in the 70’s.
This is a 1990 Saleen Mustang convertible decked out in red with striking silver appointments. At the tender age of 26 years old with only 23K original miles, 2nd owner, this gem is a rolling time capsule that offers a glimpse of life as it was in the 1990’s. Drop the top, sit back in the bucket seats, abundant leather and awesome entertainment. With a 5.0L H.O. engine, 5 speed shifter you can attack a curvy road with passion or grind away at the asphalt. This can be your dream car for only 23K.

Hi,I am selling my 1985 Saleen #65. This is a real 1985 Saleen that I bought out of Arizona. It is a fabulous car. Extremely fun to drive. Ive always loved the authenticity of the Saleens. Especially the foxes. The car spent most of its life in AZ and on the west coast. Its extremely extremely RUST FREE. I can swear to you I have yet to find any on this car. It is a factory grey color, but has been repainted once. It is one of 139 Saleens in 1985 and is one of five in this color.
The car runs strong. Extremely strong. Literally I kid you not when I say that this car has power EVERYWHERE. It has just as much low end as it does high end. Its a 331 stroker, MSD 6AL Edelbrock performer heads, h beam rods, Vic Jr intake, and Holley carb. The thing does not miss a beat. Hands down the best running carbureted car that I’ve ever owned. Its got a World class t5 trans with a BBK short throw. Aluminum driveshaft, and 8.8 with 3:73s and posi. It will roast the tires at will. While rolling or at a stop. Honestly I can not even tell you how impressed I am with that little 331. Like I said the car is rust free. Like not even a spec.
Also, I am selling the car with 2 sets of wheels. The factory set which are the black ones, and a set of 15in Rikens. The Rikens would have come on a ASC McLaren Capri. Both sets are in great shape. The car has subframe connectors, KYB shocks and struts, etc. The body is fairly straight. Minus a few dents and scratches that it has required over the years. But everything is there, all the ground effects and everything.
The interior is also in fair condition, sporting its 20 some years of use. The only thing on the interior that is not correct is the steering wheel. Somewhere along the line someone changed it to a later model Saleen wheel. BUT the factory center cap still remains on this steering wheel. The Speedometer and tach are not in working order. Partially because of the MSD. The Clutch is perfect, doesn’t miss a beat. Headlights, taillights everything with a light bulb works. Even the information center in the center console. The shift knob is factory but is missing the button that has the shift pattern on it. Rear defrost still works. And as you may see this was also a factory AC car, but was removed long ago. Has an electric fan that turns on automatically with Temp.
The tires are in fair condition with life left in them no doubt. Basically all in all, this is a great car. Take it out, enjoy it, without having to worry about it. My plans were to slowly restore it. But life happens. Thanks for looking and I know I’m missing things I just said what I could think of off the top of my head. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you 6055531527
