The launch of the Saleen Cup has been delayed, with the single-make series, scheduled to debut this weekend at Sonoma Raceway, having been pushed back to next month.

Delays in the production of the Saleen S1 Cup cars, due to “unanticipated delays” of the import of parts, has been cited by the American automaker, which has a manufacturing plant in China and joint venture with Jiangsu Secco Automobile Technology Corporation.

The arrive-and-drive series was due to feature a grid of 20 Saleen S1s this weekend, in support of the SRO Motorsports America event at the Californian circuit.

“The Saleen Cup cars require specialty components that are sourced globally, and unanticipated delays importing and clearing these parts through customs have significantly delayed production,” a statement from the manufacturer read.

The series’ launch has now been slated for the next SRO America weekend at Portland International Raceway on July 13-14, with additional events at Watkins Glen International, Road America and Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

It is due to feature two 50-minute races on each weekend, with single or two-driver lineups and a mandatory pit stop.

Saleen will still have a presence at Sonoma, with a “race ready” version of the Saleen S1 set to complete hot laps, with the manufacturer hosting a hospitality area.

No word has been given if the delays could impact Saleen’s planned GT4 car for 2020.

PETROLICIOUS: THE SALEEN S7R IS STILL A PARAGON OF A BIG DISPLACEMENT RACE CAR

Nearly Two Decades Later
The Saleen S7R Is Still A Paragon Of A Big Displacement Race Car

What constitutes historic and classic racing is likely to be an ever-evolving discussion, as the years roll on and cars that don’t seem to be that far on the fringes of history begin to turn up to classic race meetings while others slowly fade away.

New historic divisions for cars that are often less than twenty years old—love them or loath them—do turn out some fabulous racing, and grids populated by cars you might have forgotten about in the last two decades. Cars such as the seldom-seen Saleen S7, of which there were two present at the recent Spa Classic in their motorsport “S7R” trim, which some may remember competing in various top-level GT championships at the turn of the millennium.

Petrolicious, Saleen S7R

The hand-built road-going version debuted in 2000 and produced roughly 550hp from its naturally-aspirated 7.0L V8, but gained most of its notoriety from the fact that it was a rare breed in general: a mid-engine production supercar made in America. The brainchild of Steve Saleen, who up until this point had been mostly involved with building hot Mustangs, the car was also developed in the skilled hands of Ray Mallock LTD, the famous Britain-based motorsport and engineering company. Indeed, it was RML that assembled the racing versions of the S7, and the first S7R finished late in 2000 was immediately shipped stateside to compete in that year’s American Le Mans event at Laguna Seca, where it finished in 26th place.

Saleen always quoted the S7R as being not very far removed from the road-going car, seeing as it was indeed built on the same space frame, steel-tubed chassis, with bolt fasten sub-assemblies, used the same suspension design, and even the same brakes—albeit without the ABS that was fitted to the production versions.

Of course, the Ford Windsor-derived engine is in a higher state of tune in the S7R, and the gearbox features straight cut gears that produce that familiar whine. And on the subject of noise, this is a machine that sounds just plain terrifying, as V8 racing cars ought to. Fired up inside its pit box, warmed up with short stabs of the throttle, the barks from the back end are felt in your guts; hands cover ears in quick panic around me as the unrestrained V8 is brought to operating temperature.

Petrolicious, Saleen S7R

On the track and on song, it’s much the same story, as the pistons spin up to the 7000rpm redline and the six-speed ‘box finds another gear to repeat the tremendous ascension of noise all over again. Although this car isn’t really old in the grand scheme of things, I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic, there’s just something about the noise of a screaming racing car with hundreds of horsepower and three pedals. But while the car is going around quite well around Spa, was it actually any good during its contemporary competition years?

Well the answer to that is yes, actually. It may not have quite had the same impact as the Vipers and ‘Vettes, it did enjoy a successful racing career during a hotly contested period of GT competition. A class victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring in its infancy stated its intentions and proved its competency, as well as a European Le Mans class championship win and a class podium at Le Mans itself in the same year, 2001. Further successes followed, with wins around the globe and championships earned in both British and Spanish series.

Petrolicious, Saleen S7R

The #163 car pictured in this article is chassis S7-03-029R, which competed in the 2004 ALMS championship under the ACEMCO banner, driven at that time by Johnny Mowlem and Terry Borcheller, although David Brabham did have one drive early in the season. The team finished 2nd in class that year, behind the better-funded Corvette factory outfits campaigning the C5-R, and this was to be an indicator of how the Saleen racing story would reach its conclusion. Financial troubles started to hit the teams running the S7R’s in various series, and as such, starting in 2005, Saleen began to downsize its racing efforts to focus on a few specific championships. The car pictured wearing the #66 was ACEMCO’s example of doing just that, as it focused solely on the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2006, where the car managed an overall finish of 11th.

By the end of 2007 the teams involved in running the S7Rs had either folded or moved on to other platforms (it was getting quite long in the tooth after seven years), and despite one last hurrah in 2010 when an S7R took the LMPGT1 class win at that the great 24-hour race. It showed what might have been had the racing efforts been better funded, but also showed just what a capable racing machine the S7R continued to be despite its age. Thankfully, this wonderfully mean machine now has a series to compete in once again in the newly-reformed Endurance Racing Legends Championship, and we can once more revel in its presence.

GRASSROOTS MOTORSPORTS: CLASSIC COOL | SALEEN MUSTANG

Classic Cool
The Saleen Mustang

By: DAVID S. WALLENS on May 28, 2019
Original Article: GRASSROOTSMOTORSPORTS.COM

Time for a little history lesson. Don’t worry, the test will be open book. Back in the `60s, retired racer Carroll Shelby added enough spice to the then-new Mustang to turn it from hot to hotter. Today a legit one is a six-figure proposition–or more, as a one-of-one, GT40-powered Shelby GT500 Super Snake just sold for $2.2 million.

Now let’s jump forward. Steve Saleen, also a driver, followed a similar recipe and likewise offered his own hotted-up Mustangs through select Ford dealerships. The Saleen Mustang debuted for 1984, with the big performance upgrade being its Racecraft suspension: stiffer springs, Bilstein dampers, Goodyear Eagle GT tires and Hayashi alloy wheels.

The Saleen package also included some visual flair, like an `80s-appropriate aero kit; a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; and, of course, the requisite badges. Also standard: an Escort radar detector. In 1984 the Saleen package retailed for $4195 and could only be added to a Mustang L or LX coupe fitted with the 5.0-liter engine. Figure about $7100 for the Mustang itself.

Saleen offered modified Mustangs throughout the entire Fox-body run–and continues to reworks Ford’s latest. The firm tweaked the formula during the Fox-body years expanding to include upgrades like five-lug hubs, Hurst shifters and straight-through exhausts. Convertible and T-top cars were eventually put under the knife as well.

The firm offered more horsepower, too. The 1989 Saleen SSC celebrated the Mustang’s 25th birthday by adding a built engine, while a Vortech supercharger became optional for 1992, the year before the end of the Fox-body run.

Here’s the take-home message regarding these Fox-body Saleens: While the aftermarket has always offered the same upgrades, these cars have legit collector appeal. Those six-figure Shelbys? At one time they were just inexpensive used cars.

WHY YOU WANT ONE

• In a sea of Mustangs, here are the ones that stand out. Those now-iconic rocker panel stripes plus the Saleen windshield banner came standard.

• These were the days of a 55 mph national speed limit and 85 mph speedometers. A 170 mph clock was part of the original recipe.

• Saleen built as many as a few hundred Fox-body cars per year, so while rare, they’re not impossible to find. Complete year-by-year specs can be found on the Saleen Club of America website.

• The holy grail of Fox-body Saleens is the 1993 SA10. Only nine were built, each one to order. They all look the same, though: black hatchbacks sporting yellow and white graphics.

• A little birdy recently hinted that collector insurance quotes for Fox-body Mustangs are on the rise, so if you’d like to get ahead of the curve, this may be your chance.

They’re the `57 Chevy of our generation. I think it’s the time to buy Saleens and put them away. It’s a huge in-the-future collectible.

Stay away from modified cars. You don’t know who built it. Even a modified 5.0-liter Mustang isn’t that fast.

Buy the most expensive and nicest car that you can afford. You’ll never get ahead of the game by buying a restoration project.

The most prevalent years are 1987–`89.

Those were the largest production years. You can buy a really nice car for between 15 and 20 grand. The really, really nice cars are 25 grand and up.

You can’t get into a decent SSC for less than $25,000. They’re usually in the $40,000 range. Saleen made 17 supercharged hatchbacks in 1993. Those cars are $60,000 and up.

There’s a registry with all of the serial numbers. People can call Performance Autosport to authenticate every car.

Some of the parts are available and some aren’t. The one thing that I always tell people is avoid buying a car with torn-up seats.

The 1987–`91 cars had a Flo-Fit seat. Saleen had custom material made for those seats. You’re screwed if you buy an early car and the seats are hashed up.

No one makes material that looks close. I would buy an 80,000-mile car that looked like a 30,000-mile car before I bought a 30,000-mile car that was beat to poop.

The cars are fairly bulletproof.

I’m helping to liquidate one of the largest Saleen collections on the East coast. With only 1600 miles, this is the newest 2008 that you will find. This was one of the first American made cars that had an MSRP over $100k. Most dealers sold them for $10k+ over MSRP at the time. Sterling Silver with two tone leather and suede charcoal interior with 25th Anniversary emblems. This is one of the highest horsepower and most expensive Mustangs ever built by Steve Saleen with an MSRP of $100,000 and rated at 620hp. A rare opportunity to acquire such an exquisite car.

“According To Steve Saleen – Of The 25 Built, 6 Have Been Destroyed, 9 Were Sent Overseas (mostly to the middle east), and 2 Are Now In The Mustang Museum. That Leaves Only 8 Of These Beauties Roaming The American Classic Muscle Car Landscape. once in a lifetime opportunity. This American muscle car has never spent a night in the elements. With only 1600 miles, it still smells like a brand new car. There are no scratches, dents, or blemishes of any kind. The paint looks like it did the day it rolled off the assembly line. Bid with confidence. If you are not 100% satisfied with this car, you don’t own it! Call with any questions. Craig 8434578989”

From Classic Car Studio:
In the automotive world, there are a select number of small batch manufacturers that start off with a good vehicle, obsessively massage it, and manage to improve it greatly. The idea is not to completely redesign, but rather to rebuild it in a manner that says, “this is the way they should have build this car.”

25 years ago Steve Saleen took this path with the Ford Mustang and since then, he has been successfully tweaking Mustangs into serious, limited production performance cars. Since the founding of the company in the early 1980s, Saleen has won the Manufacturers GT Championship nine times and has produced over 12,000 EPA certified vehicles. In addition to these cars, it has equipped over 600,000 additional vehicles worldwide. Impressive.

To commemorate its 25th Anniversary, Saleen produced just 25 Saleen Automotive SA-25 Sterling Edition Mustangs – hand painted, loaded with performance options and as exclusive as it gets, these Sterling Edition cars are as rare as the S7, but based on one of America’s Muscle car staples, the Ford Mustang.

The power plant in the Saleen is a quick revving 302 Modular V8 with 620 HP and 600 lb-ft TQ. As a power adder, the engine uses a port matched Twin Screw Supercharger with Dual Stage Water-to-Air Intercooler system connected to one of Saleen’s Cold Air Induction systems. At the front of this unit is a Hi -Flow mass air flow sensor and K&N style filter. Engine internals include forged aluminum pistons, forged connecting rods, forged crankshaft and performance camshaft. The aluminum cylinder heads have been ported on a 5-axis CNC machine. This nasty powerplant exhales through a stainless exhaust with a really race sounding note. Gone is the 5-speed transmission, and in its place is a new 6-speed unit. The rear is a trick Speed-Sensitive LSD and the car utilizes a performance clutch with a lightweight flywheel.

The handling on the Saleen is lightening quick courtesy of the Racecraft suspension. The car rides on tuned coilovers, beefed up sway bars and has a Watts linkage rear suspension. The brake system features massive 15″ rotors up front with 6 piston calipers and 11.8 inch rotors in the rear. The wheels are custom forged 20″ one piece wheels that really set set off the stance of the vehicle.

The Saleen is practical enough for everyday driving, fast enough for the track, and extremely collectable. No matter what your needs are, this car has it all.
